It's obvious that the Honda engineers must be great at their jobs since a stock Ruckus seems to be jetted spot-on for everyone and everywhere. Not until one tampers with success does the true appreciation kick in.
To use as a benchmark without searching all the jetting threads, please list your Year, mileage, engine modifications, elevation and current jetting combo with comments. Although there are several variables, I think this could be a great time saver for someone with the same mods to use as a starting point.
Year: 2005 Mileage: 600 (miles) Engine Mods: - BSS Pod Filter (using PAR system) - Kitaco "Sport Bike" Exhaust - Kitaco Hybrid CDI - BSS Variator (doesn't really affect jetting, but threw it in) Elevation: 10' above sea level. Temperature: Mid 70's (degrees F)
Current Jetting Combo: -40 Slow Jet / 85 Main Jet
Comments: Very close but a little lean on the very top. Top speed about 39-40 mph without tucking on flat road. No backfiring and I can go WOT at any time without bucking or stalling. I plan to go to a 42/85 combo next and will update.
I hope this helps. Thanks group, let's grow this database.

Year: 2006 Mileage: 4000 (miles) Engine Mods: - K&N Filter - Yosh CF Exhaust - Chanito 41mm Piston - H.O. Cam - BSS Variator (doesn't really affect jetting, but threw it in) Elevation: 1000' above sea level. Temperature: Mid 60's (degrees F)
Current Jetting Combo: -42 Slow Jet / 82 Main Jet, idle mix screw opened up somewhat
Comments: Still dialing in the idle but other than that it runs great across the board.

First off-This has been essential to my re jetting needs. Secondly, I have myself a 07' Ruckus with an BSS Gauze Filter Intake and I've been messing with the jets for the past few days now. Last night I was working on it as soon as I got home at 5 until 1am furiously sweating and learning all at the same time. So here's my first question- the Idle mix screw. WHERE THE HELL IS IT? cruise on over to the dealers site I got my Ruck from @- www.nyhondayamaha.com/fiche_section_detail.aspyou can find all the service manuals online there.I looked at the diagram of the 2006 NPS50 Carb and also read as many posts as I can and but can't seem to find the info. anyway here's what I've gotten to so far. tried a 42/85 set up and I bogged a little off the line at first but when it warmed up it took off fine. It always struggled to hit my top speed of 40 mph. It was a windy day yesterday so I tried my best to ride in the calmest of scenarios. Checked the plugs-Black Soot. Dropped the MJ to a 82. Now I'm at 42/82 Bogged again off the line. Top speed is hitting the 40's mph. Again the wind. Took out the spark plug and found it to be a little less blackish more brownish....I should've kept this combo... All of this jetting without knowing where the Idle Mix Screw is! Anyway I switched out the SJ to a 40/82. Thing ran like crap. Then I realized something- I didn't drain the carb....which leads to my second question. Will I have to clean my carb now that I got fuel all up in my carb? As I was turning the carb over to hit the 3 screws on the bottom and all the fuel in the cell just went up into the head....Is this the reason why the Ruckus bogged and wouldn't accelerate? Is this why I had to run it for at least 30 minutes before it went to normal? Anyway back to the jetting- So my current set up is 40/82. It's pretty good off the line. Not great. And my top is barely hitting 40 mph. The spark plug is white. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm going to stay at 40 for a SJ and go up to 85 MJ either tonight or tommorrow and then post my results. Please give me suggestions on this cause my brain is fried. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BTW- So far the mods I did. BSS Gauze Intake CDI Kitaco Variator with 3x6g/3 OEM rollers and blue Clutch pulley springs current jet set up 40/82. (runs like poo) above all-I definitely LOVE the way it sounds with the BSS intake as opposed to the stock airbox. can't wait to get that new exhaust to make me louder.... HQ

Oh Sheet! I noticed something that I forgot to mention. While doing the Clutch Pulley Springs I noticed that while I was putting on the Kickstart washer on the variator side wasn't exactly going ALL the way in. I mean it's on, it's seated but it seems as if it's not on as fully as it was before. I read a thread called "Chewed Crankshaft" battlescooter.proboards27.com/index.cgi?board=problems&action=display&thread=1181569573&page=1 and after browsing through that I'm getting worried. Is that why I'm not busting over 40mph?

It sounds like are you doing well....I agree that a 42 SJ is too big...you'll likely want a 38 but a 40 might work fine too. I'm surprised an 82 MJ isn't working for ya. Since you said the plug is white an 85 MJ makes sense to try next. About the fuel draining etc....no that shouldn't be an issue. If some fuel did run down into the cylinder it would get burned up in the few first seconds of idling. What may be an issue is that when you replace the jets, the carb bowl winds up empty and so when you fire it back up it is starved for fuel intially. What you want to do is flick the key on (without starting the Ruck) and then wait 10 seconds. You should here it faintly pumping/clicking about 15 times. Then flick the key back off and repeat this cycle about 5 times. That should fill your carb bowl back up and then you'll be good to go. Whenever you are testing out a jetting setup and looking at the plug etc make sure that you are doing it with a warmed up Ruckus. When you try a jetting setup go for a nice 15 minute ride. A Ruckus always runs better once it's warmed up so your jetting results might be lackluster with any setup if you just do a 2 minute ride even if it's the perfect setup. You'll also get more accurate plug readings with a warmed up Ruckus and remember than a plug changes colour very quickly so ride it full out for 1/2 mile or so and then hit the kill switch and come to a stop. Don't let it idle or anything. About the kickstarter washer. What you need to do is get some belt slack before you slide the parts back onto the crankshaft like this: Once you've done that, you should be able to slide the outer variator plate and the kickstarter washer onto the splines. If you don't get the kickstarter washer started on the splines and you just crank the nut tight then you're going to mash it into the splines and damage them unless you're very lucky. It's also easy to not get the nut completely tight if you don't create some belt slack because you'll start pinching the belt before the nut it totally tight so it feels snug before it really is. To check if your variator is okay just remove the drive cover and grab the outer variator plate. If you can wiggle it at all then you need to tighten up the nut. If you did mash the kickstarter washer onto your threads it's too late now so you leave that for now and next time you're in there you might have a hard time getting the parts on and off so you may need a file or something to clean up then splines.

See the first post for my mods, but I've revised my jetting to a 40/90 combo. For me, this setup is working great. Idles fine, no flat spots and revs to the moon. I'm at near sea-level so I expected to run a little larger main then the mountain men.
with the 40/85 I was running lean on top and would get what felt like surging at top speed. It wouldn't be the rev limiter since I'm running an after market CDI.
Good luck
Dan

Well, I'm so glad that I'm getting on track with this jetting thing.
Thanks for all the help DD!
Now I'm pretty damn nervous about my kickstart washer thing.
I rode it for at least a day.....
Will let you know.
But again, is this anything that would effect my overall speed?
If it's at the end of the shaft then that's just the friggin' kickstart mechanism right? Right?

Your fiche link doesn't work (microfiche links usually don't) but in the 'carburator' section of the microfiche, the idle mix screw is #4. I wouldn't mess with this until you've got the MJ and SJ dialed though. This will just help it idle better but if your SJ isn't right then this won't help you since this is really just a fine adjustment for the SJ.
About the crankshaft....if you're threads are mangled then it's too late but what could be happening is that if your nut isn't totally tight then then variator pieces can be wobbling on the splines as you drive which wears them off (and wrecks the variator). If this is the case you'd probably hear a wierd noise but regardless, it's a good thing to check by seeing if you can wiggle the variator plate at all. If you can't then the nut is holding them tight.

The idle mixture adjustment screw is number 4 on the fiche I will try to get a pic of it tomorrow and post it to clarify any doubts, i will also post a step by step carb tuning as i think most people have it all wrong on carb tunning

I think it would be good to also list the weight of the rider. As weight plays a major role in tuning the ruckus as well.

I have a ton of mods on my ruckus and still use the stock slow jet and an 85 main, i have cut the spring 1 and a 1/2 coils, and readjust the idle mixture screw, but anyway, i am at sea level, have a big bore, chanito intake and windshield and a modify stock muffler

Generally for a BB Ruckus it's MJ: 82-90, SJ: 35 (stock) or 38 and then a little toying with the IM Screw should get it idling nice.
