Unfortunately I don't have the manual handy and I need to pick up some oil for my new ruckus. I have always been very partial to amsoil in my motorcycles, does this oil still work in scooters? I know that motorcycle oil lack additives required for automobiles, where do scooters stand? Also, amsoil is a fully synthetic oil, is it ok to put that in my 2003 ruck with 4500kms? I also found this stuff, looks really promising but they do not list scooters specifically. www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/ase.aspxKyle

The general consensus on here is that it's okay to switch to full Synth oil around 1000kms.
I normally use Mobil 1 10w30 but I sometimes use 10w40. I'm considering switching to Mobil 1 motorcycle oil but I'm not sure if that's a good idea because they add some special stuff in case you have a wet clutch so I'm not sure if that's a good thing.
Anyways, Amsoil is very good oil and it should work no problem. The oil you've linked to looks like perfect oil for our scoots...I can't think of any reasons why it's not ideal.

Amsoil is a great oil and i am planning to use it on my final gear case, but expensive synthetic motor oil is only a necesity if you are planning 2500 miles oil changes, i recomend a 600 miles interval and the use of conventinal oil should be good enought

A how to on changing the transmission oil or on disassembling the whole transmission?
If you just wanna change the oil then you can just go for a ride (to warm up the oil) and the pull the bolt and lean your scooter way over so it drains (you can get about 90% out) and then just stand it back up and refill it to the bottom of the bolt hole (I overfill it and then let it drip and once it stops I know it's right on) and then just replace the bolt.
I am planning on doing a how to for disassembling the rear clutch which is a precursor to the transmission some time in the next couple weeks. I'm only home on weekends and next saturday I'll be reassembling my engine with the big bore piston and the one after I'll likely be rejetting and a few others things but the saturday after that (July 28th) I can probably get the clutch how to and maybe the transmission one done too.

what oil do i use and where exactly is the drain bolt? Does overfilling it hurt the transmision's performance like overfilling engine oil?

You need to use Hypoid SAE 90 Gear Oil. The drain bolt is located behind the drive cover and right next to it you'll see writing that says '0.1L' which refers to the amount of gear oil it holds. I believe it's a 12mm bolt.
Overfilling the transmission does add some drag so try and get the level right on. Like I said before, just overfill it a little but leave the bolt out because the correct level is flush to the bottom of the bolt hole so if you let it drip until it stops then the level will be right on.

Anyone know what 'hypoid' means? I'm just curious if there's a big difference.

Anyone know what 'hypoid' means? I'm just curious if there's a big difference. It is gear oil with an anti-scuff additive required for hypoid (offset) style ring and pinion gears. Hypoid gears are curved, spiral type gears typically found in differentials and shaft drive units.

So back to oil changes, types etc. I have changed my oil at 600KM and now at 1300KM. I used Normal Diosaur Oil (for Cycles). I wish to go to synthetic at 2,000KM and hope to change it every 2,000. I am looking at Quaker State high performance engine synthetic. It is $6.99 at Canadian Tire. It is supposedly for high reving engines, so I thought it should do for the Ruckus. I may go for a different brand. I read elsewhere, perhaps here, perhaps totalruckus, that Automobile oils are OK. Any comments? ?? Glen Simpson

Any good quality automotive oil of the proper weight for your conditions will work fine. "Motorcycle" oil may have additives in it that are meant for a wet clutch that the Ruckus doesn't have. I won't say there is absolutely nothing to gain from using the expensive stuff. However, if oil changes are done at proper intervals, the gains from expensive oil won't be very significant.

Wal-Mart has a 4 liter container of their house brand oil for about $22 Cdn. It is a Full Synthetic. Anyone know who makes it for them? There is also Canadian Tire version, their Dinosuar Oils were made by ESSO (said so right on the label), but I don't know about the Synthetic Motor Oil. lso I ahve seen High Performance Synthetic, High Milage Vehicle Synthetic etc. Is there all that much difference in these oils?

Chanito always says just change the oil every 1000kms and it doesn't really matter what quality you choose because the intervals are so short. I agree with Chanito but I still use top of the line Mobil 1 because when you're only using 0.6L per oil change the cost is minimal so I like to use the best stuff for peace of mind. You can get 6 oil changes out of a 4 liter jug of Mobil 1 which is about $35 so for an extra $2 every oil change you get the best stuff.
