While riding with a strong tailwind today, I managed to get the speedo into the twilight zone beyond 60 kph for the first time. As my speed exceeded 65 kph, it appeared that some kind of limiter cut in. The engine began to miss every second or third firing stroke, as if the ignition module was attempting to limit speed by cutting the spark.
Anyone else seen this?
regards
Peter

Yes its electronically restricted. The CDI box will help that but not completely I don't think.

I doubt that it's a rev limiter. I think it's a vehicle speed limiter. The engine wasn't turning many more revs than it usually does.
I estimate the Ruckus' engine works between 2000 and 5000 rpms.

Well, unless you think the vehicle limits it's speed by aplying the brakes, the speed limiter would have to work by limiting engine revs.

Speed limiters use the vehicles digital speedo to know when to start applying a spark cut. The Ruckus has a speed limiter of a different kind. It's called a variable belt drive. When the belt gets to it's max ratio the max RPM stops the fun. Please, everyone who is thinking of tuning buy some kind of tach. I don't even sell them, I just want people to know what's going on. You can't tune without a tach. These are some of the things I've heard. None are true. 1. the ruckus has an air sensor 2. speed lmiter 3. it has a electronic limiter 4. it knows when you modify it and adjusts back down The ruckus has a throttle position sensor that allows the ECM to give the proper ignition timing. This is the only magic that happens aboard the ruckus. We need to remember the ruckus makes less than 5hp. It does an awesome job with that power and 5hp from 50cc is great! This is not meant to insult anyone. We just need to focus on fact.

I was reading in the owners manual today that if the 'engine hot' light comes on than ruckus automatically limits its speed (Pg 152 - 154 i think). How would the ruckus do that? Just curious. - Dan

The Ruckus has a temp sensor on the motor. Like lots of newer stuff the ECM safe mode.

I didn't know that it turned over that fast, but I forget that it's a single. I guess it's deceiving, especially since it idles at 2K.
It is one sweet little motor.

It's an amazing little motor. You guys got me to put my stock motor back in. Now I'm making my Ruckus fast with 50 motor, it's fun
