My ruckus is driving me crazy lol. It’s a 2014 that was bought in 2017. Ran awesome, never had an issue. Only thing I did was added polini variator, belt and weights. Goes about 42-43 mph. Ran great before it was parked. Anyways it sat for a few months, when I went to start it, it wouldn’t idle. So I cleaned the carb and it was a clogged pilot jet. Started and idled fine, Took it out and then it wouldn’t go past 20, seemed to bog and just wouldn’t go past 20. Cleaned the carb again, drained the gas and put fresh gas in. Tops out at 35, but accelerates slowly, once warm it’ll start to bog once you stop and give it gas again. So I replaced fuel filter with an oem one, air filter was dirty so replaced as well, replaced with ngk spark plug. Went thru carb a 3rd or 4th time. Starts up easy, but acceleration is poor and top speed is sometimes 30-35. Seems sluggish and doesn’t have the top end anymore. I just checked compression after it was warm and it was only 30 psi. Manual says it should be 202 psi. I’m thinking valve clearance? Valve shims? Doesn’t make sense that it happened just by sitting tho? I thought maybe fuel pump but it pumps and clicks as it should. Any ideas are appreciated thank you

Just to check real quick... Did you have the throttle wide open for the compression test? I've forgotten that before and nearly condemned an engine. Hah
Check for cracked hoses off the back of the airbox and that the drain hose (lil orange one off the back) is sealed correctly. Sounds like you've got some lean bog from an air leak. Give it another once over and check back.

Yep I forgot to hold it open, so I warmed it up and then did it again. Holding throttle all the way open I got 60 psi. A lot of valve ticking, idk what’s normal and what’s not.

Hoses all look good, I popped the cap off the orange breather, it was clear. Another video I watched on YouTube, guy only had 60 psi as well. My next thing is to check valve clearances. Then get shims if need be. I’m just confused as to how it would have happened just sitting parked in garage. Never once had an issue, sits a few months, now full of issues 😬

Glad you got the compression up a bit! All jokes aside Gett ng issues after leaving a machine is pretty common all you need is a valve seat to corrode a little to cause a long term issue. Running a bit of oil through the works before putting it away can make all the difference sometimes.

Yeah I didn’t heed my own advice, not letting it sit that long without starting it here and there. Before I knew it, it sat for longer than anticipated. I checked valves once cold, intake was good at .06mm, was drag at .08mm. Book calls for .10mm. Exhaust valves were good at .10 but drag at .13. Book calls for .19mm. So my valves are tight. So I go get smaller shims, or is it a bigger issue than that? 60 psi is still way lower than it should be.

It really should just be a matter of swapping for looser shims. Shims being too thick make it harder for valves to seal when everything is all hot in the engine. Hopefully this is all that's left to do in order to make it run right. Enjoy your weekend!

Yep so I went down a size or two with the shims and that solved my bogging issue. It’s back to going 42-43. Thanks for the help
