2006 Honda Metropolitan 50S - Inconsistent throttle bog issue
I’m having a very inconsistent throttle bog issue when the little scoot is warmed up. Starts well, idles fine cold or warm. Out of the garage it scoots right up to speed and purrs along. After a few miles - sometimes ten minutes, sometimes more - it will bog down when given throttle. It’s usually after a stop or slowing for a turn, but I’ve had the throttle cut out when riding at WOT a couple times too. Sometimes it’ll die, sometimes it wont, and usually restarts fine if it does die. I can usually get it to limp along under very low throttle - it’ll bog out if given all but the tiniest of twists, and if it tolerates that for a while I can then bring it up to full throttle and normal operation (seems like going down a hill helps?). It’ll cruise along all normal for a while, then bog out again seemingly randomly. Occasionally if I get it rolling along slowly it will respond to a quick crack to full throttle, but with a momentary lag. Little scoot is moody when she’s hot.
Here’s what I’ve checked/done/changed -
New spark plug. New K&N air filter. New battery. New fuel filter, fuel pump (not a Chinese one), new check valve, mostly new fuel lines. New ECM (had a charging issue - think that’s solved now), new LED headlight and tail light.
I reset the ECM after installing the new one/changing the battery. I tried riding with the fuel cap off, or removing it when it bogs - no help. Tried refitting the air filter, and I’m sure it’s in the right way. Tried taping up the intakes which only seemed to limit top speed. I poured some carb/fuel system cleaner in the tank, I think the guy I got it from let it sit for a while.
I’m assuming more than a few of you will suggest cleaning the carb. Would a dirty carb cause this inconsistent/only when warm kind of problem? It seems like much more of a job than cleaning both the carbs on my ‘79 Honda CB 200 - things sure haven’t gotten any simpler with time. I live a little above 8,000’ elevation in Colorado, so I’d like to re-jet when I do the cleaning. What main jet should I order? Anything else to tune for altitude?
