Hello All,
first time post here, thanks for having me in. I work on a lot of Ruckuses and find them generally to be quite reliable and readily diagnosed. I have one in at the moment which is a bit troubling. Let me describe the symptoms:
-pretty simple: if I turn the key to the ON position, it seems as tho the bike powers on for only a half second. Head light, tail light, blinkers, horn, speedo lights, fuel pump, even electric start will all work (or at least TRY to work) during this very brief period of time, but then all power goes off and the bike is completely unresponsive.
I can do this as many times as I want - shut it off, turn it on again, lights come on, then off after a half second. Its accompanied with the noises/lights of whatever I happen to be using at that time. For example... if I hold the horn button (so I don't have to time it to coincide with the 1/2 second the bike is on), turn the key on, all instruments PLUS horn will come on, then the whole thing shuts down. Same with e-start... for a brief moment, the electric start will try to crank, but then the bike shuts off again.
I've had troubles with various relays on these things (mostly the blue starter relay), but this seems to be considerably different from those failures. The blue relay tests good (I apply 12V to appropriate terminals and get continuity across the "big" terminals) and all relays make their appropriate clicking noises... but again for only a second until the bike powers off. I will probably order a set and try anyway. Fuses are all good. Battery is healthy and generally I keep the thing on a 12V power supply while I'm working so I don't drain it. Grounds up under the battery box appear to be fine.
Here's the other weird part... I went to reset the ECU. The process seems to work as normal (though I've never had this actually solve anything for me that I can recall). Blue/yellow wire to positive, key on, HL on, wait a sec, disconnect jumper. HL shuts off, then back on. Seems to work as it should. The funny thing is WHILE the ECU is in this post-reset state, the HL stays on and the whole bike actually seems to stay alive, but still for only a few moments. I can use brake lights, blinkers, horn, etc, until it seems that something discharges, and eventually the bike shuts off. Almost like the ECU stores a small amount of juice? If I were to use anything high-load (like e start), all lights and accessories shut off immediately.
Thats the description... let me know if you have any questions about that. Hate to be one to say "oh the computer must have failed" but at this point I'm looking for options. Is there a way to test the ECU, short of swapping with a good one (which I do not have)? Has anyone else had this problem, or one like it? Again, this doesnt seem to be a low battery or bad starter relay kind of thing to me, so unless I've misjudged that I'd like to think about other possible failures....
Thanks!
