Hello, Im a new ruckus owner. Me and my best friend just bought used about 2 weeks ago. both of us have upgraded from stock variators , and my ruckus came with a daytona progress racing cdi( not sure if good or not).
The big difference between me and my friend is weight. Im a solid 270, and he is probably 115 soaken wet. so obviously he smokes me on the open road. This leaves me constantly looking for ways to atlas get a little more out of the ruckus in hopes of being able to stay a little closer when he takes off or maybe not feel as bad for making him ride slow with me.
flat road - 32-35 uphill-24-27 downhill - 40
polini variator - 5g dr pulley weights yoshimaru exhaust daytona progress racing cdi
if anyone could give any advice or any success stories on upgrades that have worked with heavy riders, that would be much appreciated! thanks in advance.

A quality designed intake setup will go a long way. The best off the shelf I know of was set up and fine tuned with a wideband by a good friend of mine and then it was reproduced and sold through TheRuckshop.com. The TVR intake is what you'll want to look for.
As far as the CDI goes Daytona is a well known company out of Japan and if my memory serves me right it bumps the 8,800 rpm limiter to 9,800 rpm (Theres a chance I may be confusing it with the Dynatek CDI)
At your weight and with the CDI, I personally would opt for something more along the lines of 4g Dr Pulley sliders. The Polini variator is well known for performing best with slider weights instead of rollers. Also, investing in a $30 trail tech tachometer is a great way to tune the cvt. It easily lets you know if your RPMs are too high or maybe too low depending on your variator weight choice

I am 270 as well. I have done moderate performance mods.
Polini Variator with I think 5.5g sliders Gates CVT belt Yoshi Exhaust NCY CDI, NCY performance coil and a decent spark plug. Airbox delete and installed MNNTHBX.com Air intake and rejetted. I did the jets and sliders last year then never really got to ride my Ruckus. Pulled it out this summer. All seems to work fine. Also installed a TTO rev counter. On the flat at I have a gps speed of 42mph (free app on my phone) Since I am just getting back into getting it tuned up, I forgot to check the RPM at 42mph.... Also I use 93 octane fuel. No point cheaping out on a dollar a gallon when it uses so little fuel.
If it wasn't for the cost of a fancy exhaust I would say my performance mods have been pretty reasonable price.

42mph for 270 rider weight is not bad at all, brotha! I'm 240 and rocking right at 50 on a good flat with a 45 cruise speed. Tops at 52 when the stars align! My set up is close to the one mentioned above with a few variations. Differences: 6g sliders Home grown intake system Performance plug Combined parts for a more custom exhaust Header pipe with a swivel flange(good for fatty or stock setup) that has a 1/4 in seamless extension on the head end that functions as a built in exhaust seal. Performance street bike motorcycle slip on can(no baffle or packing) with custom fabricated fitting slips for a tight fit and sealed with silicone exhaust sealer paste. Stock carb jetted and shimmed for my airflow and claimant.
Next is a shaved flywheel from jc racing for added get up and go on take off and smoother acceleration through the gears.
With all that said, one of the most overlooked mods to get more out of it for a rider sitting at 200+ is a rear suspension upgrade! Smoother ride and no bottom out equates to less "road interference" on your ride. Thus, helps you maintain speeds more evenly. I personally opted for the ncy adjustable heavy spring. It has treated me right and provided a noticeable difference! Adjustable is awesome so you can raise/ lower with weight fluctuation. Good luck and happy riding!

Yup I got the NCY adjustable shock. Totally bottomed out the OEM shock. I think with a bit more work I could hit 45 on the flat. Not quite sure what the max RPM is supposed to be....
