I just bought a used 2011 Ruckus on Maui from original owner, 2650 mi, excellent condition, lots of customization, very cherry. It ran the whole time at sea level and ran fine when I purchased it. I put $1 of 89 octane non-ethanol gas in the tank and drove it a couple miles at sea level. Then I hauled it in a van and drove it to 1600' elevation then drove it 3.7 miles to 3000' elevation, made the climb ok. Then I coasted it back down to 1600' with the power off and when I started it I began to have this problem while driving it down to 600':
Having some fuel intake?/timing?/exhaust? issues with intermittent loss of power with sputtering and backfiring, drops down to 10mph at full throttle for a while then pops out the tailpipe and runs smooth, revs up to 20mph then bogs down again. Makes no difference uphill, downhill or flat. Once or twice got up over 30mph for a while; died both times I got to 1600' coming up from 600' and had to kickstart it. Ran a bit smoother at higher altitude from there to 3000 even up steep inclines. I'm guessing elevation change or the coasting (realizing there may not be a neutral gear) may have affected something in the timing?, intake?, vacuum?, sensor?
It died on the downhill slope and I had to coast it down to 1600' where it sat several hours then I had to kickstart it and revved it hard up on the workstand, ran strong, rode strong about 1 mile then bogged out again on a decline and died at top of following incline. Kickstarted and revved again and it ran like a champ at full throttle over 40mph for several miles down to 600'. I parked it thinking it a miracle fix, next time I started it I had to turn around in under a mile of slight incline cause it was chopping out so bad. Tried again after sitting a week or so at 600' and it ran great first 1/4 mile then bogged out again.
Tried again last week, got less than 1/4 mi and lost all power, engine died. Starts fine electric or kick, runs great on the workstand to full throttle, but when the wheel is on the ground I get no power, bogging, sputtering, backfires. Shade tree mechanic diagnosed clogged jet, did some research online; I'm going to open and clean jets with guitar string and see if it fixes the problem but I'm not convinced cause I don't have any problem revving full throttle on the stand, just on the ground, and then it is intermittent but increasingly worse; would love to hear some other opinions. I'm guessing extreme elevation change or the downhill coasting (realizing there may not be a neutral gear?) may have affected something in the timing?, intake?, vacuum?, sensor?
I've owned and repaired some motorcycles in the past but have no experience with scooters or this machine or any later than early 90's so I'm just guessing at what this malfunction is cause I don't know what the tech is. Recommend a good repair manual?
Thanks~
