Recently bought a 2009 Ruckus with no mods. It has 800 miles on it and I have only put 100 of them on since I bought it. Clearly, the bike had been sitting around a while.. I changed the oil, gas, and coolant before I started riding it. So I was just riding along a few days ago at full speed and the engine light came on. Seconds after the light came on, it felt like the bike dropped into 1st gear or something and I stopped immediately.. I just bought this bike and am super bummed I cant ride it and don't know what is wrong. I have no previous motorcycle maintenance experience but would like to learn to fix things myself..
Any suggestions on where to look first?

The light is the overheating light, which means your scooter is low on water and the computer is limiting your rpms in order to protect the engine, check the coolant, bleed the system and get a new radiator cap, which is more than likely the cause of your problem, if you have access to a pressure pump for the cooling system make sure you do no have any leaks, and the scooter will be back to work ok after it has time to cool off

The coolant is full and freshly bled, the cap has no signs of wear. I dont have a pump to check the cooling system.. What can I try next? Would it be back to try and start her up? I havent since the issue occurred.. Many thanks!

Make sure the oil is full, the tires fully inflated and that there is nothing blocking the radiator, then sure go ahead and take her for a ride

2009 ruckus..Well overheated on a long trip 50 miles...now is it an electrical problem so I unplugged the computer waited a minute or two and plugged it back in. It started right up but would only idle for about a minute again. I thought it might be the sensors on the carb so i unplugged the computer and unplugged both the TPS and the electric choke then plugged the computer back in. It started up again but then I had the constant high rev problem, then no idle. I have checked the idle screw several time and the throttle cable that is not the issue. It looks like everything I can see in the carb is also functioning properly. RESET THE COMPUTER AGAIN....... DO I do the usual and throw money at this with a new TPS and electric choke and temp sensor

I guess I will make sure the oil is full, the tires fully inflated and that there is nothing blocking the radiator, what about the real issues facing the sensors on the ruckus...

Sound like a carburetor problem, you will need to clean it and make sure the slider slides smoothly

ok so running a 40 slow jet and 85 main going out to pull the plug and rebuild the carb again..should I go richer or leaner its running treated lucas non ethanol 93. if its a head gasket i will do a leak down compression test tommorrow ..seems like the TPS isnt doing crap plugged in or not as well as the choke..Total wasted ruckus after it overheated on a 50 mile trip this week..less than a mouth full low down on antifreeze in the radiator...like i said flushed it all out. no issues on the coolant..THE problem is the ecm wont reset like it should the light doesnt come back on after the head lights go off when the jumper wire is removed like it should and used to..IS IT a bad sensor TPS or temp sensor? ? NEEDS a diaper change i guess....its a baby OK its not a carb problem so far trying to decide to change or not change jets. Plug looks normal now is the time to help...

OK guys i again rebuilt he carb replaced the jets with 42 low 82 main and it runs great on the low end but ...when you hit wot.... or close it acts like it has a regulator on it.... the headlights go up and down.... no full throttle wot..so like its regulated...headlights go up and down no power....

Sorry for the bump I agree with the carb problem. Being to lean on fuel to air ratio can cause it to run hotter than normal. As well as a high idle. What modifications have been done to it? Air filter, Exhaust?
