Not much you can don without spending more money than the scooter is worth. I would just remind your wife that you have the power to literally pee anywhere b/c you're a man.

To pick up a little faster I use the lighter metro roller weights. Keep the tires maxed on air pressure. Oil level in the lower range. Windshield helps. Make sure the air filter is clean. Enjoy the ride because your not going to win any races.

A metro is smaller, lighter, more aerodynamic, with less rolling resistance. Without any serious engine mods, you won't get quicker then it. But rollers and/or variator are a good start.
