Hello, my 2003 ruckus 50 is the funnest thing I have ever owned. That aside, the engine ticks after a ride with the engine on. Does this indicate that it needs a valve adjustment? what else would cause that?

Yeah, your valve gaps (one or both) are too big. Once you get good you can tell if it'd one or both cuz if they both click it'll be double the clicks. Just see the thread on this topic. You can do it in maybe 2hrs.

Just a quick question. What are the shims for and where do you get them. please explain. do you really need them. I've done cars with feeler gauges and never even thought about "shims?"

Most car engines use an adjuster that is a nut and a screw, so you loosen the nut and then adjust the screw in or out to adjust the clearance of the valves, once you got it, tighten the nut and you are set, very convenient and easy, only problem is that is very heavy, so if the engine is to rev high is not a good idea, inertia loses are high so a lighter system is use in high reving engines and the lighter system is just a shim that goes between the cam and the valve, the only problem is, that if you need adjusment you have to put either skinnier shims or thicker ones, therefore you have to keep a supply of diferent thickness shims, you can get them at a dealership or you can order them on line if you know what thichness you need, hope this info will help

btw, the first 500 miles or so the valves tend to bang the valve seat into the head a little, which usually tightens the gap. cars i have done were usually tight, too, but had 30,000 miles or so on them. cars with adjusters can go either way pretty regularly. "2 cents" ;D my ruckus had a hard time running after about 400 miles cuz the valves were about .02? intake and .010 exhaust when i checked it.

hello all... thanks for many and many a solution to various issues i have had with my 2015 Ruckus, improvement ideas, and basic maintenance. i bought this from a friend, who had it 2nd hand, and a lot of poor maintenance, and quick fixes to larger problems have been done to it...i have been searching for what to DO when there is no clearance on the intake valve at all. i saw the following post and am asking YEARS, a DECADE AND A HALF LATER for a solution. btw, the first 500 miles or so the valves tend to bang the valve seat into the head a little, which usually tightens the gap. cars i have done were usually tight, too, but had 30,000 miles or so on them. cars with adjusters can go either way pretty regularly. My Ruckus has blood sweat tears and jeers cheers and gears any help appreciated
