does anybody kknow if i torque the crankcase bolt to 20 will that hurt it...because it says in the book to torque it to 18 lb ft

It shouldn't, the reason you are suposse to torque bolts is to make sure it stretches enought to be tight, but not enought to stretch the bolt too much, the reason the torque value is only 18 is because it has a seal that doesn't like to be squeeze too much, but 20 should be close enought to not damage the seal, but plan on replacing the seal everyother oil change to be in the safe side

Chanito, I don't have a 'seal' ... I have a washer that looks like it never needs to be changed. The service manual mentions changing the 'seal' every other time also, and I asked at the Honda parts counter and he said no there is no seal, just the washer ... looks like a brass washer??

Probably just like a air cooled VW. The oil change kit comes with six small copper washers for the bolts and one copper washer for the drain plug. So, I am assuming that they just use the copper one which is proven to be good! ;D

i don't have a rubber seal.. theres a washer 12mm

;D You are correct, the seal is the copper washer, sadly copper gets squeeze and loose its springness (if there is such a word) and fails to seal, so in order to prevent that there is a torque spec, but as we know when you take the bike to a dealer they will just tighten the bolt until it is tight (probably way more than the torque specs) just be safe and replace the washer every two oil changes

OK, sorry 'bout this, but I now need to revive this thread because I wanted to go and change my oil today, but then when I got out there, I was worried that if I took this crankcase bolt off that I wouldn't be able to replace that sealing washer.
Knowing that my local resources are scant at best when it comes to metric tools and fasteners, what kind of a washer do I need for this? Can I do it with a rubber washer? Can I do it with a lock washer? Can I do it with a washer that has a 1/2" ID instead of 12mm?
Also I don't have a torque-wrench, so I am planning to just tighten it to what feels right. Will that make much of a difference? Thanks much for the help and advice.

I have had the original brass washers last years. Don't overtighten and using teflon tape or sealant is ok too. Any correct sized brass or alum washer will do the job. A fiber washer would work. An o-ring will not survive the crush factor. If you have a dearth of avail supplies you could try to find a new or used small brass covered head gasket and cut a gasket out of it with a tin snips or metal shears.

Or you can go to your friendly Nissan dealer and ask for oil drain washers, they will probably give you a couple for free ;D
