Does anyone know a way to do this, or if a special tool is needed?
This morning when kicking, the little washer clip behind the kick pedal popped loose and I lost the pre-load of the spring. The internal part of the kick start now grinds into the pulley, so I am stuck because I have no way to start it- electric start is fried due to my CDI mod, and I can't take it somewhere to have it worked on because I don't want the parts grinding all the way to the shop.
Will it start if I leave the swing arm cover off and start it with an electric drill with a socket on the pulley? Seems sketchy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Driving my car an extra 3 or 4 days a week just seems like such a drag.

If you still have the clip, you can fix it. I think there is no preload to the kick starter and if there is, it is just enough to hold the kick starter lever up. The spring's long side hooks around the long pin that sticks out on the cover. The short spring side hooks into the groove on the starter gear and not in the hole. The starter ratchet that has the wire clip that is bent goes in the groove on the cover. Starting with the drill, might not be a good idea because you have to turn it to the left which is the way the nut turns to come off.

Thanks. Sounds like I was reassembling it correctly, it just didn't feel like enough tension was on the spring. I'll give it another try tomorrow.
Thanks again,
