So, Memorial Day weekend was beautiful here. The sun was shining without a cloud in the sky. I decided to pull my new Honda VFR800 out of the garage and give it a good wash and a thorough detailing. I spent a couple hours on it making it look like it just came off of the showroom floor. It was perfect. I went inside cleaned up and decided to take it to go grab a bite to eat. I leave my street and pull onto the main road and get up to 40mph. All of a sudden, a car pulls out of a side street around 40 feet ahead completely oblivious to me. I swerved, jammed on the brakes and the back tire locked up for about 5 feet. That 5 feet put me into the point of no return for hitting the center median. The bike and I went soaring through the air into oncoming traffic. I hit the ground with my shoulder, broke my collar bone, punctured my lung and ripped the muscle out of my left arm. As I hit the ground, my immediate reaction was to get the hell out of oncoming traffic. Still sliding, I got to my feet and ran over to my bike in the road. Without realizing the extent on my injuries, I tried to lift my bike up off of the ground and dislocated my shoulder. I then collapsed on top of my bike. I think I fainted for a split second. Luckily the was a nurse that saw the whole thing happen as well as two other motorcyclists. They came to my aid within seconds and pulled me out of the road. I was rushed to the hospital. I won't bore you with all of those details...
Long story short: After I got home from the hospital and got my bike from the impound lot. I took a quick assessment of the damages. To my untrained eyes, it looked like it was going to be $2500 in parts damage. I decided to make a claim on insurance. They came and totaled the bike out with $8500 damage. Apparently, when I hit the median curb, it cracked the frame. Nice. That 2007 Honda VFR800 ABS 25th Anniversary Interceptor had 2600 miles on it. I broke my land speed record on that bike (152mph). I was planning on retiring it to my "Sunny Day Rider" collection. I guess that spoils that idea.
By the way, my left shoulder is 3cm shorter than my right shoulder now. Oh, and the nerve damage in my left arm? Wear your body armor.... The road rash was the least of my worries. I still need one more surgery on my collar bone.
