Here in Florida that is the law already and i think is OK, i do not know the cost involved, but here a license plate is about 15 dollars a year and around 50 for insurance, you are not required to have a motorcycle endorsement on your license, of course having so many tourist make a scooter a popular rented vehicle and you see them in all kind of city roads, but trying one on a hwy is sure to get you stop by the police

Well, I'm already insured.
Still, sounds pretty stupid, to me. Guess I'll have to keep an eye on that.
Then again, the Ruckus is already too fast to fall under moped regulation...

the part that is stupid is this..
TO LIMIT THE 5 OPERATION OF A MOPED ON A PUBLIC STREET OR HIGHWAY TO THOSE
6 PUBLIC STREETS OR HIGHWAYS WITH A POSTED SPEED LIMIT LESS THAN
7 THE MAXIMUM SPEED RECOMMENDED BY THE MANUFACTURER FOR THE
8 ENGINE DISPLACEMENT OF THE MOPED BEING OPERATED.
ok.. so where would i ride.. every road here is 55mph.. and there is only 1 road from my house to town.. no other way.. that is just retarded.. they should have the law say if you had a dui you cant ride one.. then everything would be good..

That's my situtation also BlueRidge! I don't mind getting it tagged and insured, that's just fine but with a manufactures top speed of 42, I can't legally leave my yard! I really don't know how they will enforce this law since it would require leo to have each and every make and model's top speed. I don't think the Ruckus looks like a mo-ped or like much of a scooter but the met does...to the untrained eye...lol. As of now, you must have a license to ride them...but there are a lot of people who ride without a license around these parts. I don't know if anything will change other than tags and insurance....which I expect....yet...I keep looking at the Honda Rebel....

I live in VT and was pulled over by two cops. The cops asked me why I thought they pulled me over. My response "wasz I driving too fast" They said no, but apparently someone called them and said I was weaving all over the road! Which I do a little. They asked me if I was drinking? I told then only orange soda! They were kind of carious about the ruckus. Asked how fast it went? My response was "up hill or down"! But anyway they didn't give me a ticked. The only place you can't ride is the interstate. If you got a ticket for impeading the flow of traffic and took it to court and argued that it only goes 40mph and you were driving it as fast as it would go, I wounder if they would drop it. It was the fourth of July weekend that I got stopped. I asked the cops "Did anyone call you and tell you that I was given the finger about 15 times, that someone passed me in my own lane about a foot away from me with cars going in the opposite direction, and that someone passed me and run the car going the opposite direction off onto the shoulder, and that a tour bus passed me on the right on a shoulder. That was all in a 30 mile round trip on RT 7. Vermont is a layed back state, it is usually the out of staters that drive like a Bat out of Hell!!! When I am riding the ruck or any vehicle and people stick up there middle finger at me, I am confused??? Are they telling me their: Age??? IQ??? or that I am #1!!! I just take it as I am #1 and just smile and wave back with all five fingers. I think people wave with one finger now! Maybe they are just to lazy to use all their fingers! Have you seen the movie "Super Troopers" that was made based on Vermont State Police. Some might be that bad, but I think the town cops are the worst. Beautiful day! going for a ruck ride!!!

They pulled the bill...so as of now...nothing has changed for riders in nc. good.. that bill was stupid as hell.. but i did see this.. and look where the idiot is from Sen. Tom Apodaca, R-Hendersonville, also introduced legislation to regulate mopeds. His legislation goes farther than Rand's billing, requiring moped riders to have a driver's license, register the vehicle and get insurance. His bill is currently sitting in the Judiciary Committe "edit profanity".. linner go get him.. he's from your neck of the wnc woods.. heh also went to the nc website.. saw this bill.. now this would be cool.. www.ncga.state.nc.us/Sessions/2009/Bills/House/PDF/H166v0.pdfbill to raise max speed to 50mph instead of 30mph.. now that bill i support ;D:)

That is a bill that ought to pass. I support it. Our state needs a bill like that! We already have to license scooters and get insurance and take a test to drive one. Mopeds don't need to, but they are resricted to about 28mph, under 50cc, 2hp or lower and have to have peddle power along with being automatic. We have people that come here to ride bikes. The bike tours are a big thing fot these outer staters. They should not do those!!! Talk about a hazard!!! They can not ride them in a straight line. There're all over the road! In the middle of the road, two wide in the hills and corners! The way I look at it, the roads are for motor vehicles and bike trails are for bikes I do believe scooters and mopeds should be able to go 50mph on a level surface.

I've always thought it was stupid that mopeds are restricted to only 30 mph. Hell, city speed limits are typically 35.

Yeah, I hope this one does not get passed. NC is one of the few states that are very cool on the scooter laws, I hope it stays like that. It is my only method of transportation till i get my license back.

Well, looks like they're going to ban texting while driving. At least that's something I can get behind...

Talking on the phone doesn't bother me so much, because you don't need to take your eyes off the road for that. But texting, that just drives me bananas. People driving looking down. Might as well bring a book for the long drive home from work, eh?
