I am not sure if you even need to change it, in the maintenance schedule of the service manual it did not mention it.

I think it's recommended by honda to be changed at 15,000 miles. I would wait for DD to show up as he has experience with a ruckus with over 30,000 miles on it.

Double check the owners manual but I believe you need to use SAE 90 Hypoid gear oil. 'SAE 90' refers to thickness of it and you can probably get away with something like 80w90 too which is pretty darn close.....or SAE 80. I'm not 100% sure what the 'hypoid' part means but I believe it has something to do with helping your gears not wear out. So I'd say this is pretty essential. To actually change the gear oil, read by post here that I just posted: battlescooter.proboards27.com/index.cgi?board=De&action=display&thread=5115

hey, thanks! i might just start saving up and let a local shop do it. so, i got the new nut for my rear tire. it was too hard to put on by hand so i let a shop down the road do it with a pneumatic impact wrench. it stripped the threads on the bolt a bit but the nut is on DANG tight. i'll probably have to cut this one off as well 16 months from now and use a threader to recut the bolt threads but at least i'm on the road again. what the heck is up with that nut? is my bolt too big? i don't get it! i did Chanito's muffler mod half way. all i did was install a piece of 2 1/2 in. iron pipe into the hole i made. and the slightly deeper purr of the new muffler combined with the lighter hum/whine of my new pirelli sl60 tires makes a very satisfying sound i can't really describe. well, exotic maybe. the ride is smoother and i feel like i'm gripping the road better. gonna post pics soon. gonna tweak the paint job. she's gonna be beautiful. i truly wish i could make it to a meet. i'd love to cruise down the road with a hundred rucks around me. one day maybe. peace.

You can get the Honda gear oil (75w90) at the dealership, it is about $13 for a liter or so- and considering you are using about 600ml, that bottle should last you and all of your friends for the next 20 years. Normally you remove the drain bolt (at the rear of the swingarm) and lean the bike over to drain it all out. Then you fill it until it dribbles out, meaning it is at the same level as the bottom of the hole. I use a small syringe (like from some adhesive or epoxy) that has been cleaned out, but the Honda bottle comes with a thin tip you can shove in. (the syringe works better, I put a small chunk of clear fuel line on it so I can see) And yeah, DD- Hypoid I think refers to gears that are kinda like the angled cut gears, but then encounter "sliding forces" across the faces- they tend to get higher transfer forces that will "crush" oil molecules between them Try Wiki-ing it, there is a small diagram. But that's probably too much info, just know that you need an oil that is made to stand up to high pressure.

thanks for all the good advice. it's good to know she won't need this for a while. had no idea she'd run so long without so much maintenance. 30,000 miles is pretty impressive!
