what should i use to plug the valves? or does it even matter?

It doesnt matter as long as it stays plugged. I got those little coloured plastic plugs at my local automotive shop (lordco)
I've actually just recently unplugged it and added another filter to it like on a lot of the K&N filtered Zoomer pics you see. It still works fine.
