Have just changed my oil and have attempted to remove and clean the oil strainer but the nut for the strainer was solid. How often does the strainer need to be cleaned and any advice on how to remove the strainer plug, looks like it has never been removed. Scooter is a 2006 and 13000 miles Cheers Folks

Hey guy,
you shouldn't have much of a problem with removing the oil strainer cover bolt. Just get a good open ended 17mm wrench and tap it a bit with a small hammer near the end. Therre is a rubber seal that may have gotten stuck to the metal but should break free with just a tap. The ft-lbs of torque when tightening should only be around 15 ft-lbs so that's not much.
Also the bolt is a light weight metal so you can only make it so tight. I really think you just need a little patience and a bit of a tap with a good open ended wrench (17mm)
After you get the initial break free remember the bolt has a spring that retains tension on the bolt. So it retains a bit of tightness throughout the unscrewing of the bolt.
Good luck guy.

Have managed to get the strainer cover bolt off, it was really fixed solid. After spraying several times with releasing fluid and taking exhaust off I managed to get a socket on the nut but it sheared all the corners off due to the nut being made from aluminium and not very deep. So had to get socket that used the flats of the nut and managed to get it loose after lots more spraying and knocking with a hammer to break the seal. After all that trouble the strainer was clean, just need to buy me a new nut now. Thanks for advice everyone cheers

I was looking at doing this last weekend, but do you really have to remove the exhaust?
My torque wrench sure as hell won't fit on the bolt with the exhaust on, and I'm worried about over/under torquing it when putting it back in place.
If it's not a critical maintenance point, I'll skip it. A simple oil change brought my performance right back to tops!
