I'm new to site and I'm buyng 08 ruckus this week. What can I do right away to get better performance? Top speed mainly. Live in R.I. and I'm 185lbs. I think I'll be the only one in this state on a ruckus. Never seen one on the road.

The only mod Ive done so far on my 07 is changed the air filter to a Briggs and Stratton of the exact same size as the Honda stock (I forget the model #). It's a little bit lighter and leans the fuel mixture a bit. I heard Honda makes the stock tuned a little rich. I gained as much as 3mph on a short steep hill here and it is noticeably quicker on the accelleration.

Does the air filter swap really make that much of a difference? If so, what is the "favorite" of you all? Briggs?

That filter will work for the hotter days. But when it cools down, you'll lose it. FYI.

I installed a K&N air filter kit that I purchased on Ebay from ruckstars. It included three filters: main carb intake/side carb intake/ and another little breather filter. First off I really noticed the sound difference, sounded louder which I kind of liked. As far as performance, I noticed a mild top speed increase of about 2-3km/hour. Mid range acceleration was the most notable improvement. Also, I noticed that once acceleration seemed to peak, if I layed the throttle open, slowly the top end speed would increase and that is where I would get the 2-3km/hr increase. Oh yah, the air filter kit also gave me a slight increase of speed on this steep hill that I ride regularly. Question for anybody: Someone at the vespa dealership told me that I would most likely be running a lean mixture coming in to my engine now. Am I damaging my engine riding like this?

I second the K&N. Never need another filter as long as you live.

Here are the Part Numbers for the Drop In Filters;
Briggs / Stratton = 491588
K&N = 33-2238
According to the the K&N Website, the B&S Number is crossed referenced on the K&N Number. There's no listing for the Ruck itself. I got the K&N Number from Firegut!
