Good seeing you! We need to assemble our troops.

Hi! I'm new. This looks like a perfect thread for me to jump into.
My girlfriend & I are about to move to LA from Ohio (wow), and thinking of picking up a Big Ruckus to help out with gas costs & have fun.
I'm new to the motorized 2-wheel vehicle scene, and will also be new to the LA scene.
Will it be possible/practical/safe to take one of these around town? And between towns? It looks like I'll mostly need to get between Santa Monica, Hollywood, & Beverly HIlls. I'd like to avoid the highways if at all possible.
Also, is parking possible? And once I DO park, can I prevent the thing from being lifted into a truck? (any chain suggestions, etc.?)
I'm glad I found this site & forum. I'm literally on the edge, looking for a push. Thanks!
-Roll

A big Kryptonite chain should do the trick. I can't speak for anything else, as I'm on the other side of the country.

I use a Kryptonite New York Fughettaboutit chain too. It's expensive ($100) and heavy (11lbs) but very secure and it comes with a $3g theft gaurentee.

I have that look too. Problem is (besides the weight) is that the chain links don't go through the wheel spokes very easily. I use the frame hole instead (where the pegs would go), but I don't (and wouldn't) leave it locked outside overnight that way.

Spoonkiller did a mod to his floorboard where he basically cut a round hole in the back of it just in front of the rear frame bar and then he put a rubber marine grommet in the hole to give it a finished look. I'm not sure if you could get one big enough for the Krypt. chain but even if you just left one of the rear bolts that holds the floorboard down out then you could lift up a corner and slip it through. I do like the idea of using the rear wheel though because it would be very tough to cut through the rubber and rim to free the chain and remove the wheel would be superhard too because you'd need to take the exhaust off too first so it's a god 15min of disassembly and then you'd still be making off with a scoot with no back wheel.
I haven't actually used my krypt chain yet though because I just got it and haven't needed to yet. Is it really hard to get through the back wheel or just a little annoying?

Just annoying. You have to rotate each link to let the next one go through the rim opening, they just fit. The links also scratch the rim opening a little.

Awesome. Thanks for the tips. I think I would have to leave it parked overnight with the chain, as I won't have a garage. Hmm.
Anyone for the LA-specific questions? Punisher? Or whoever it was you saw?

A really good idea is to go to eBay.com and search for 'Honda Ruckus' and then right at the bottom under ebay sellers is someone selling covers for the Ruckus. I have one and it's nice and their price is 1/2 of MSRP. If you're gonna be keeping it outside spending $35 is a no brainer to keep the rain off along with the eyes of theives, bird crap, dust and fading from the sun.

Or whoever it was you saw? I ride my ruck in the Glendale / Burbank area with know problems. I do keep to the side streets and ride as defensive as possible. Some of the main surface streets in the valley are like freeways. 60 MPH is the norm. So if you are going to commute I would go with the BR. I have theft insurance on the ruck, if a pro wants it he’ll get it. All you can do is slow them down with a chain. BR is too heavy to pick up, however it can’t be nearly as fun to ride as the LR. Mouldmkr, where in that area do you hang out? I used to live in Burbank above sunset near the starlite bowl, then in Glendale above Kenneth near the brand library at the top of brand blvd, then La Canada. 4 lousy years in Santa Fake NM. Now I'm as close as you can get to the BC border in a little farming town named Lynden, this is the last stop. Used own the gunshop on Broadway and franklyn next to the PD and the courthouse on Glendale Ave, moved it to North Verdugo Rd in '88 and retired in '98.

I ride in La Crescenta and Sunland Tujunga; I retired in 2000 and take the bike with my motor home. It makes a great fishing machine. Was your gun shop in Montrose? If it was I bought a Buckmark from you.
