I just bought a new '06 Big Ruckus from Golden Gate Cycles in San Francisco. When I picked it up, I cruised it for about 2 miles, took it back and told them that there was a problem. My BR has VERY weak acceleration, especially the first couple seconds. I explained to the repair shop manager that I've got an '02 Helix and it has way more pickup, and I found it hard to believe that the '06 BR would be weaker. He told me that i need to break-in the engine, and then he told me that due to emissions restrictions, my BR wouldn't be as fast as my Helix! What?!?! That can't be right. It's been 2 days now, and I've put 100 miles on with no noticeable difference so far. I rode with a passenger last night and with the initial lack of pick-up it is completely unsafe. Has anyone else had this experience? Did they set it up wrong? Everything else is fine, I got up to almost 80 on flat road. Please Help!

I've been around this forum for a while and I've never heard of anyone complain about that so there's a good chance something is screwy. I'd say take it back and let the dealer go for a ride. Don't accept a product that isn't working properly.

Doesn't sound right to me-
I just bought my BR less than two weeks ago- I'm around 350 miles right now-
Every now and then I feel a 'slight' hesitation when it's cold in acceleration- kind of a 'flat spot'- then it flies right by and everything is fine. Doesn't happen once it's warmed up.
I'd definitely make the dealer check it out- You're experienced. I admit, I think my BR is a bit less in the power department than my Reflex was- same engine, go figure- but nothing bothersome or worrying...
Good luck- let us know-

I don't know how much extraneous crap the Peoples Republik of Kal had Honda put on the emissions side. I rode a Helix for 17 yrs and yes it's the same Reflex/Helix engine but the gear ratios and final drive ratio have to be different. My Helix had way more snap off the line than my BR has. It's OK but not near as perky as my old Helix was. But you are describing a slug with an anchor: BUT if you got it up to 80 then it is somehow restricted as to acceleration or is not properly going all the way into low gear. The variator geeks here could tell you that. Take it to the dealer and be nice as he is your only hope American Honda :Pdoesn't give a rat's "edit profanity" about it's customers or their plight or opinions.

During the first, 600 miles, DO NOT GO OVER 50 mph. The speed on new bearings can be scored. I would vary the speed a lot; but keep it under 50 mph. The hills of SF are well known, that could have something to do with your acceleration problem. I have 2004.7 miles on my BR in two months. It is a bit scary when I try to access highways on the access ramps. I have to make sure there is plenty of room to get up to speed. Our hills in, Pittsburgh aren't nearly as steep as yours in, SF.

I just bought a BR and notice the same lack of pick-up power. I have an Elite 150 with more pick up power from stand still. With my BR I noticed If you are on an incline and need to get going quickly there is an extrememly slow acceleration. Why is this? Other than slow pick up once moving on flat pavement all seems to be fine. Anyone else?

I replaced my air filter and seems to have helped quite abit. It seems that the air filter was soaked with gas and had restricted the cold air intake. Could use abit more pick-up speed.

Hi Oak. Was the filter soaked in gas or oil? Does your BR now accelerate at a constant rate from a stop - no more dead spot?
Also - where is the air filter - I think I should check this on mine as well.
thanks

demingr, the air filter was soaked with gas, it seems like the gas had made the filter fibers "swell" and had limited cold air intake. It is now much better with the new air filter, but still has as very slight hesitation. I noticed that once the air filter had been changed the idle was much smoother. Not sure why the air filter was wet with gas, I haven't had a chance to check the new filter, but I suspect if the new filter has become soaked, the carb may need to be rebuilt.
Keep us posted on your results.
