I was wondering, it seems that everyone who has switched their bars and stems around use a mtb stem. I found a really nice bmx stem that is solid but it occured to me that all the ones I've seen and read about all state that they have used a mtb stem. What's the reason for this madness?

Nothing is wrong with a BMX stem, except that it will generally be longer in overall length (not the actual reach but the external overall length) which you may find binds with your cables trying to go into the front box hole, especially when you turn the handlebars side to side. Also with a bmx stem you can't use most MTB handlebars (diameter too big) , but you can use any bmx bar without having to use shims. When you get the brake levers off, i'd recommend drilling the nub off the inside of each one (don't drill your handlebars) This keeps your bars strong and lets your levers move in a crash (if they move they won't break) Oh and be gentle with the speedo, it takes a while to get it free of its holder, undo the wire connections for it behind the ECM It's not an easy mod but it's also not hard, take your time and try to think it all through before you start. Good Luck ! ;D now if only I had a ruckus to play with...

I pulled the temp light out. Oops. That was my big mistake... Had to wire up another LED because the wires got pulled out of the light too.. GAH!

I'm going to try to replicate an exact holder like the speedo and weld on two brackets for the speedo and I want to get a tach. on there too. So, hopefully I can get all this down soon here. The weather is startin' to come around and I'm gettin' the itch to ride outside again.

A BMX stem will work. I read somewhere around this site that the fork tube is 7/8" - give or take- its metric. The new standard for MTB & BMX stems is 1 1/8", but the former standard 1" stems are all over ebay. I was about to pick up 3 for like, $9.99 or something. Anyways, you need to make a shim to go from 1" to 7/8" out of tube stock.
7/8" is the standard BMX bicycle handlebar diameter as well the standard japanese motorcycle handlebar standard. Look on ebay or do a search for Flanders handlebars, go to their site and check out all of their bars. TONS to chose from, anf going factory direct gives you a lot of options. My shop down the street has a black drag bar for $10, and the last time I put one on my vino it took about 20 minutes. oh, And if the bar is too wide for your cables you can use a small pipe-cutter to shorten the width and ease up on your cables.
Currently I am working on an aluminun stem that a friend will CNC for me. I'll get pictures up later.
