Wow! Very interested in this thread since I'm hoping to get mine painted in a couple months when I have the $$$. So what all are you getting painted? Rear frame? Front frame? Seat piece? Front rack/light holder? Handle Bars? That seems a bit hard it you're only taking it apart as much as you have in the top pic. It might be faster to take it all apart then to mask all of that plus you'd get a better job.
Did you cut the horn bracket off while you were dremeling? It's a tight reach but it looks much cleaner when you've got it off. So how are you getting it painted? Are you just buying some paint and doing it your self (spray paint? airbrush?). For me I'm thinking I'll totally strip it down and then I'll use paint thinner to remove the old paint and perhaps prime it before I take it in to a shop to get professionally done. I'm pretty set on silver right now but I'm trying to decide between regular car paint or getting it powdercoated. I'm also gonna contact abe and see if it's possible to get a silver covers for the battery/electrical area. They make a ltd. edition silver Zoomer in japan and it would be awesome if abe could get me these covers to complete the look. The japanese zoomer even had a silver fork.
That's all late summer when I've got more $$$ though.

In the top picture, it was about half done. we ended up taking the seat frame and the big frame under it off, and the scooter is now on blocks. The handlebar is off as well as the headlight frame. The horn was just relocated into the position it just supposed to be in...inside the battery box. The parts are going to be sanded down with 400 grit wet sand and then 600 grit wet sand, to sand off the old paint. Then it will be painted at my friends body shop, with flat black paint. The batter box will be a different colour tho..thinking orange or something like that. the peices should be ready by beginning of this coming week, so i'll put it back together and pics will def. be posted. PS taking apart the frame is hell. do it with a friend, or else you will start crying once you realize you need help and there is no one around

Pardon my ignorance but what is '400 grit wet sand' is that a kind of sandpaper or is it some kind of sandblasting? It seems to me that using paint thinner and then sanding it lightly afterwards would be the quickest and easier way but that's coming from a guy who's never really done anything like this.
I know what you mean about it being a major hassle to strip everything off. I had a lot of it apart when I took my head off the engine last week. I'd probably plan on a full day just to strip everything off.
P.S. Nice Boppers ;D

wet and dry sanpaper is made in grits all the way up to 2000. In laquer paint jobs and blending paint and in a repair up to 1500grit is often used. The paper is very water resistant and the water is used as a lubricant to make the finish smoother and the paper lasts about 4 times longer as clogging of the paper is not a problem. You use a bucket of water or a hose turned on to a trickle which keeps flushing the residue off the surface being prepared. The finer grits are used before buffing when a clear coat is being used as a finishing top coat.

Oh man!!! Sweet Will! I can't wait until my new rear frame comes in now as I will be doing the same. Totally ripping all the parts off and taking it in to be painted. However I really don't think it is neccessary to strip all the original paint. Maybe it is though depending on how the new paint could react with the factory paint. I am thinking that I want to go with sort of a "grabber green" with a tinge of metalic flake. I don't know if you've ever seen the "Baja Bug" on MTV's Pimp my ride. but that paint scheme would be killer!! Hey Will !!! Does your buddy want to do another bike>>> and How much are you paying if you don't mind me asking? OK THANKS

I can't wait until my new rear frame comes in What happened to your current rear frame? You didn't get in an accident did you? Will: I'm sure your way is a lot cheaper but you could just order a new frame in matte black. The camo Ruckus's come with matte black paint. I think you'd be out about 264$ US (Rear Frame = 75, Seat Frame = 90, Front Frame = 31, Headlight Holder = 68 (ouch)) which I'm sure is more than you're paying. I'm just throwing it out there in case there's someone who want a different colour but is scared to paint. Most of the parts are reasonable. The pricing is kinda wierd though cuz the headlight holder piece is very simple and by far the smallest peice yet it's 68$ (ronayres.com) vs. the a whole new rear frame is only 75 or the front rack part is 31 and it's way more complicated....anyways...
