Howdy all.
Had my Ruckus for almost 2 years and am just now getting into mods.
I would love some advice on choosing the right shock: I am 6'2" and weigh 180 pounds. Battlescooter has 2 options: either a Showa shock or the 270mm chrome shock listed right below the Showa products (which is cheaper than the Showa stuff).
The Showas come in a couple of lengths but I am (only) guessing that either the 260mm or the 285mm are the way to go.....question is, which one!? The chrome one is 270mm and I like the look of that one best.
Thanks you guys: what a great resource we have here, pushing the boundaries of this already capable and awesome machine!

wow. i am completely under-whelmed by Canadian Customs Todd and I got our stuff today, finally (were we maybe a little impatient? Nahhhhh) and have already put Todd's chrome shock on. Coupla questions for y'all; how much play should there be on the bottom bracket of the shock? It seems a little bit loose when tightened up to the required 20 ft/lbs. Also, the top flange on the new shock just touches the bracket on the bike's frame..... any ideas?

;D Got my new chrome shock...and another Battlescooter t-shirt...last week. Got it installed & also noticed the rubbing at the upper collar & the frame. Looks like it will probably rub the paint a bit, but I don't think it will be any worse than that. Just waiting for the rain to clear up to take it for a ride to see how it feels. Set it on the second notch as suggested on another post. The lower mount should be snug...not too tight but no slopiness either.

Installed my 260mm Red/Gold a few weeks ago. I installed it first set at 3 out 5 for the preload. That was definately too soft for my 165lb body. It was almost bottoming when i sat on it. I took it off and cranked it up to 5/5 and that works great but I wouldn't recommend the 260mm for anyone much heavier than I am. Maybe 180lb max. for a good ride.
It possible to crank the preload without using any special tools. The real issue is grip, not strength. I found that leather gloves give you the grip you need.
Oh, and the red and gold shock looks downright sexy on a black ruckus.

Hey Duster.
I sent an email to Jason @ Battlescooter re: the looseness of the new chrome shock. His reply:
"...the problem is the chrome shock does not come with a bolt kit like the Showa. I guess we should mention it in the item description. You are the first to mention the problem. To correct it you need to visit a hardware store and buy a sleeve for the top shock bolt. The top hole is of a larger dia. than the bolt. The sleeve needs to fit into the top hole on the shock, this will fill in the slack."
I am now gonna have to remove the chrome shock and shop around for a steel sleeve. Dunno if this sort of thing concerns you (do you have the shop manual?) but there are torque tolerances for the upper and lower bolts used to attach shocks. 24 ft/lbs upper and 20 ft/lbs lower.

Well, I guess I'm gonna hafta take my chrome shock off too. Didn't pay any particular attention to how loose or tight the top bolt was in the sleeve. Thanks for the tip...may have saved me some trouble down the road somewhere.

Got the chrome shock removed today to check the slop in the top mounting bolt. Mine checked out snug enough. No room for a shim. Got lucky. Had previously picked up a couple of small LED amber clearance lights at WalMart. Installed one on the crossbar under the seat right behind the carb intake. Mounted the other one on the bottom pan...there is a recessed lip on the front of the pan up under the frame casting. Fit perfectly. Wired them to the tail-light circuit. Tail-light is on any time the key is on, so everything goes off when the key is off. {Not the brake light} It's the black wire with the yellow tracer stripe. ;D

That's weird Duster It's possible some shocks got mixed up and had the wrong upper shim. I've seen the problem but no one else has had it. Well, it's an easy fix if it is a problem You do want it to have little play, it makes you feel better ;D

Today was my first trip to work since I installed the new chrome shock. Stopped raining finally & dried up some. Ride quality was great with preload set on second notch. ADDITIONAL BENEFIT. High-beam headlight is now actually useable. Apparently I now ride much more level so that the light beam shines on the ground instead of lighting up the sky. ;D Scooter safe.

you could have just adjusted the headlights. There's two small bolts above and belows the lights for left/right aim and maybe a bit of up/down fine tuning and 2 more bolts on the side of the metal light holder thing that let you aim the lights up or down.
