I have a 2003 Ruckus. When I turn the key to start, a clicking noise comes from underneath the fuel tank and lasts for 15 seconds. It will then stop. When I push the button to start, it has trouble starting. When it does start, it only will want to idle. When I try to give it gas, it will want to die. Can anybody help me diagnose what could be wrong with it. Any help would be appreciated. I am new to this board.

Well, before anything The noise you hear is the fuel pump running, that is normal, your problem seems to be gas related, get some gas aditive and add to the fuel, or just replace it with fresh gas ;D Let us know either way ;D

The clicking noise is normal - its the fuel pump.
The rest could be lots of things. Does your scoot get regular maintenance? Sounds like it might be a clogged air filter. Or it could be the valves need adjusts. Might be bad gas.
Don't worry, others will chime in soon.
(Damn - Chanito just beat this post by 2 minutes!)

It has been sitting in the garage. I have a teenage son that has been lazy. The problem probably has to do with sitting. I have changed the oil every year. It only has 1400 miles on it. Garage kept.

Should the clicking sound continue to run when the ruckus is idling?

Should the clicking sound continue to run when the ruckus is idling? That's probably the sound of your valves clacking along.

Yeah...clicking while running is very likely your valve gaps being larger than they should be. This is easy to fix but it also should quiet as your engine warms up and things expand.

Today I emptied out the old gas, cleaned the fuel filter. and replaced with fresh gas along with an additive. Still having the same problem. Will not start. Could it be the fuel pump?

It might be time to invest on a new plug, those pesky one cyl motors have a tendency to be stubborn to run with a dirty spark plug, or maybe just take it out and clean the one you have, might be all you need for the engine to run properly

How do you clean a fuel filter? I thought this was something you just replace?

How do you clean a fuel filter? I thought this was something you just replace? You blow against the normal flow, but in my opinion cleaning a filter should just be a temporary fix, replacing a dirty one is the correct way to do it, but if you are not sure, cleaning it might be a good diagnostic step, if it gets better, replace it, if it does not, then you have other problem

Well, I cleaned my spark plug. Still, the Ruckus does not start . What are the chances that it is the fuel pump?
