I'm thinking on buying the variator from the battlescooter store but would like to know a few things first. What makes the variator at the BS store a performance part? I understand the lighter rollers swap. Is it a lighter material? And what sort of improvement can I expect?

The aftermarket part has a different ramp for the rollers. It will improve acceleration and top speed (changing the rollers in the OEM part only changes acceleration). Some feel it makes it slower right at take off but it's worth it for the gains. If your on a budget you can go for just the weights for the OEM part but if you want the aftermarket part later you need the buy weights again( the two variators use different size weights).
The best weights to use are 3 6gram and 3 5.5gram.

:-[I'd like to wake up this thread. Could all the people with the aftermarket/battlescooter Variator tell us what difference it made. Anyone out there have this mod as their only mod, how did your top-speed improve ? What weights did you put in it? Thanks, Zooooooooooooooooooooooooooooomerman

To be honest, I didn't notice much difference. I know its a lighter variator than the stock one but I got just as much improvement from just swapping the weights in my stock variator. Others may have noticed a bigger difference.

Which rollers did you order for the aftermarket part?

Three 5 and three 6.
Also the problem I had with not being able to ger the variator cover (the lid with the three small plastics clips on it) off the crankshaft, has also been a problem for a friend of mine. He has ordered the same variator and having a "edit profanity" of a time getting it off as well. I'm curious, is it made specificaly for the Ruckus (Zoomer) or is it for another scooter?

i have the daytona variator they sell.i had preblems with spinning on the crank at first, but i had the shaved spacer on it. do not shave the spacer! the belt goes up real high into the case and sticks there, causing the plate to spin. put the spacer in that comes with it. you will notice midrange and top end improvement. mine goes like 30 up hills now.

Have you tried removing the variator yet?

Yeah I have a CDI and an aftermarket variator and lighter roller weights. I got a few miles per hour extra out of it. I would also say its worth it as you can't get a lot of extra speed out of your Ruckus motor WITHOUT adding these mods. There are a few other things you can do such as carb/intake mods and some that you might not even have considered such as a windscreen and slicks. But the CDI/variator are a must in my books.

I ride a Metro 1 with the battlescooter variator and a shaved spacer. I am running 3 fives and 3 sixes. I love the response I've gotten! 40 on the flats with no wind. 42 with a tail wind or drafting behind a vehicle. I need a cdi because I'm constantly running up against the rev limiter. I don't want to mess with the jetting though. Is it necessary to do with the cdi?

I will probably just shave a little more of the spacer, or better yet shave some out of the nose, there are some instructions some where else in this forum

About the plate:
The variator is for the Ruckus. The plate needs to be tight to prevent binding. The plate never spins but it does float. If it goes on smooth it's fine. If it's too tight you may need to sand the inner diameter to keep it from seizing. One problem some people have is they try to take it off when the motor is warm or hot. For some reason the plate is too tight when the motor is hot. If you need to take it off let the engine cool. If the plate won't come off be gentle. You can work a piece of sand paper in between the shaft and plate to ease the edge.

No, my engine was cool when I went to take it of (both times) and its always a "edit profanity" to get off. Doctavius has the same problem. eventualy I heated the plate only and it expnded enough to get it off. Theres no way to get sand paper inbetween the plate and shaft.

I guess it's just a judgement call when you install the part. If it's too tight as you put it on it needs to be clearanced. The part is for the Ruckus and I've had mine off and on at least a hundred times. We will add a warning on Battlescooter.
As a reminder the plate does NOT spin and it needs to be tight so it is centered on the shaft when everything is bottoned up.

Thats the funny thing, it does go on easily. I know its not supposed to spin when its on and it doesnt. But when it comes time to take it off, its a "edit profanity". Seriously it took 20 mins of wiggling using fingers and different tools to finaly get it off. Strange.

I'm not sure what can be done. I can tell Daytona, they do listen to comments.
