I think this is the most appropriate forum for this, if not, Mods, please relocate it.
Here's the problem: I'm moving to Texas from Boston and I want to take my ruckus with me. Shipping is too expensive. My car (02 Honda Civic) is too small to pull the smallest trailer U-Haul rents cross-country.
Do you guys think a trunk-mounted bike rack could support the weight of a ruckus? I have considered getting a roof rack, but I don't know how I'd get it up there.
Any suggestions?

Although the ruckus is only a mere 300 lbs, I think it would be way too heavy for a standard bike mount. You would def. dent the roof of your civic by having it up top also. Try finding a really really small trailer, not enclosed like a Uhaul, and try pulling it. You might be able to come across a tiny trailer like that. But def. do not put it on the roof or in a bike rack.

300 pounds? Huh? The thing weighs maybe 200 wet, and that's pushing it. On the matter of how best to transport it from boston to texas..I say drain all the fluids and try to stick it in the trunk with the help of a friend. (should have bought a hatch) If that fails, or the trunks already full of luggage and other goodies, Pain Merchant's idea seems good. Don't forget you need a hitch installed. If you do get the ruckus on the roof,

The ruckus weighs 181 lbs dry. ;D
I know it does not weigh 300 because if it does, I am joining worlds strongest man competition since I can load the Ruckus in my truck by myself.

Thanks for the responses, guys! After some consideration, I think I agree that a ruckus would cave in my roof. Also, god knows how I would get it up there. Possibly I could build a ramp and some scaffolding. Anyway, I've been doing some research of my own, and came across these motorcycle tilting carrier things: www.atvhitches.com/motorcycle_racks.htmlAnyone ever use them? Providing that they're cheaper than 500 bucks, and that I can find a dealership that carries them, and that I can somehow attach a trailer hitch to my car, and that my car can even tow the wieght of a ruckus and the hitch without blowing up my transmission, then I think it's my best option. But I'm still open to any other ideas.

Have you checked out the Wal-mart near you ? They should have a nice light 4'x 8' trailer for less than $400.00 US.
When you get to Texas sell it for $300 easy.
Here's what my local Canadian Tire can provide me for $500 Canadian dollars, or if your Ruckus will fit they've got a 4'x4' trailer for $349. Can.
This link doesn't help you but gives you the idea : ;Dhttp://www.canadiantire.ca/assortments/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524443248002&FOLDER%3C%3EbrowsePath=2534374303517494&FOLDER%3C%3EbrowsePath=2534374303517534&FOLDER%3C%3EbrowsePath=1408474396670124&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1408474396670124&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474396670271&bmUID=1109122982063
Wow big link!

I thought I had read somewhere that the ruckus was about 300lbs. Anywho, about that tilt trailer, I've seen these before but have never used someone. I also wouldn't think you'd blow your tranny with the ruckus on the back. Just think, it'd be like you're taking another person.

I wonder if you could buy the trailer at walmart, drive it to Texas, then return it to Walmart in Texas? You would be surprised what Walmart will let you return. I went back home for christmas a couple years ago and was bored, so I went out and bought a Playstation 2 from Walmart just for the trip. I played it for a week then returned it for a full refund.

You might want to check with Forward Air for shipping. www.forwardair.comI just checked and it is $324 to ship from Boston to Austin using one of their containers.

I was thinkin', this probably wouldn't work with a Civic, mind you, but what about them things you put on the back that haul around like the little rascal scooter things? Know what I mean? I'm sure there's a more technical name for those things, but I'm at a loss this morning.

Platforms for electric mobility scooters fit trailer hitch receivers. So do motor scooter racks like my Tilt A Rack. Gotta be a 2 inch receiver though.

This is the answer. members.aol.com/handeehitch/handeehitch.htmThis is what I was looking for. It bolts under the towing ball so you could probably use a class two 1.5" receiver on your little car. This cost $50, now that's reasonable. IMPORTANT: if you do something like this you need to remove the drive belt so there is no damage to your drive system

I like the buy from Wal~mart return to Wal~mart idea. I used to work at Wal~mart and here is the official stance from management. "You can return anything if you have the original receipt" Store managers will often reject your return themselves if the return is no longer re-sellable, knowing that you won't complain to head office . But anyways, other than open dvd's and video games... it should be no problems, just wash it. But i take no responsibility for anal store managers. On another note you get 3 returns per store without a receipt... lol. You require ID for this one and they right down in a book somewhere. Good luck on the shipping. PS. i am a proud new Ruckus owner in Vancouver! Woo Woo ;D
