Hi folks, OK - here is my new addition to my Ruckus (still no name yet). They are two ammo boxes that I have mounted onto the sides. Not only are they durable but they are waterproof as well (something nice for us folks who live on the wetcoast). I have done a bit of tinkering to get them in the place that I want but I am happy with the end product. However, for those thinking of doing the same thing you might want to consider that you are going to lose a bit of speed due to wind resistance. Stll no post on the member's ride section. I am waiting to get a nice photo. Cheers, mtndg

I was thinking about that, the other day...
So, you gonna let us in on your secrets?

You should paint them white, or better yet paint the Ruckus OD Green.

When the site was young one of the regulars used ammo cans and mounted them to a 3/4" PVC sprinkler pipe frame. I'm sure the pics are gone but maybe detective Dan could find them. Good job on the mounting.

Looking good ;D Do they scratch your frame at all? They sure make your Ruckus look tough.

What I did was buy 4 X 2" U bolts and wrapped some electrician’s tape around them (so as not to scratch the frame). I then drilled holes in the ammo boxes where I wanted them to hang next to the bike. I then used some 1/2" wood on the right side of the bike and 1 1/2" worth of wood on the left side (so as to keep everything away from the guts of the bike). I sawed off the excess bolts with a hacksaw and that is about that.
The only other thing I might do is to weld a lock mechanism onto one or both. Not a high priority but something for me to consider...
What I learned:
What one sets up for one side one must consider for the other. I made the mistake of working on what I thought was the tougher side first but I didn't account for the helmet lock on the other side. As it stands I had to move the box a little bit down on the helmet lock side. As a result the two boxes are the same distance off the ground, but slightly staggered from each other.
I will post some pictures when I get home of the insides. Nothing fancy I must admit but it seems to work well.
Cheers,
mtndg

Looks great!
Here in the states you'ld probably get pulled over by the Homeland Security thinking you're piloting some new kind of tank.
Have you used the kickstarter with the boxes in place?

I am wondering a bit about that myself. I am not to sure that the police or RCMP here are going to be fine with me and my ammo boxes. So far, so good... If I must I will probably paint them either white or matte black.
As far as the kickstarter goes I haven't tried it yet. I did make it so I thought I would have enough clearance if I needed to use it in an emergency. Still, you have a point. I should probably give it a shot and see if I can get it to go. Failing that, I think I will make a little internal pocket in on of the ammo boxes for a wrench and a few other things incase I ever had to take off a box or do some minor repairs on the road.
Cheers,
mtndg

I am looking for a industrial looking lockable plastic box that I can use for a trunk! Still haven't found with the right "look".

Thanks Tedsmini for recalling my ammo can panniers! I still have them and the Ruckus. I haven't been on the ruckus forum in ages. How cool I stop in today and see someone else has made some ammo can panniers. Better installation than mine I must say.

Hi DB, where've you been, what have you been up to? How many miles do you have on your Ruck? I started out on the Ruck and then got the Big Ruck and now have a Silverwing. What a startling progression I wanted to be able to pass on 2 lane farm roads and ride the freeway. Nice to hear from you. ;D I still have to change the shield as it's too low.

New owner. Kinda, it's wife's Ruck. But I'm paying for it. Oh well.
These boxes are a great idea. I'm sure you can find many options in your local army surplus store. I haven't looked lately, but I have seen plastic boxes you could mount on a rear rack if so inclined.
If I thought I would fit on a Ruck, I would own one. I'm 6'8" and 255lbs. So, I ride a little larger ride, Kawi KLR650.
