In search of more speed i purchased a bottle of NOS octane booster. The reason that i choose the NOS over say, STP is because the NOS is the most concentrated you're legally allowed to sell and it includes 'powertane' , which i have no idea what it is but i sounds like it would help something go faster. Anyways i am already running 94 octane and the bottle said it would add about 3 more pts on but i added maybe 25% more to the gas tank than it said too, so my octane is about 98. The results were mediocre. There is a slight but noticable improvement in acceleration and top speed improved by about 1.5km/hr (1mph). If anyone else has tried octane booster please post your observations. The bottle i bought said it would treat 60liters of gas (15 gallons???) and it costed 11$ Can (8$ US).

What gave you the impression a bottle of Octane booster or running a higher than recommended Octane rating would increase the engine power output? It's clear oil company media has brainwashed a majority of the general public.....

Higher octane stops nock if you need it. It does not add power. It's purpose is to make the gas vapor harder to ignite.

OK I'll be a trouble maker I'm not a fan of high test unless you need it. I did find out on my old XR650L that it liked race gas. I had to run race gas because I was out and that's all I could get my hands on. It would stumble if you tried to run it below idle(chopping the throttle coming into tight corners, on the trail). The race gas made it go away and it seemed to have more power. It was aircooled and ran hot so not much in common with the Ruckus. If you want to give high octane a try just buy race gas, don't add stuff it's a scam. Lots of 76 stations have race gas and some stations have race gas pumps(not in CA). I don't think you need it unless you got that Ruckus on steroids.

You'll achieve maximum performance by running the lowest octane possible as long as you don't run into pre detonation.
My Gsx1300r is designed to run on 87 octane. 87 octane will ignite quicker than 92. Therefore by running 92 I lost acceleration because the detonation process took longer.
Basically, go by your manual. If you want to go faster by a motorcycle. The Ruckus is not about fast, it's about fun, alot of fun. I LUV MY FUCKUS!! OOOOPPSS that's Ruckus.

that's interesting! i didn't know higher octane could cause less performance... i've been wondering why my ruckus was 'slowing down' over time- last summer when i bought it, i could hit 40mph no prob, but now it tops out at 34mph. i've used the highe3st octane fuel always, figuring it would be the best thing for it (and only cost a few pennies more for our small tanks). next fillup, it's back to regular!
thanx!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In search of more speed i purchased a bottle of NOS octane booster. ........... I was advised to use this stuff by my mecahnic but not in the Ruckus.
Only in the old CL70 which is air cooled. He felt it would help it run a little cooler and maybe give more boost.
I DO know that I holed a piston on a CB125 by running it on regular when I should have been runing hi test.

That really sux this topic came back up. I was hoping it would stay buried in the back of this forum forever. This was probably one of my first threads and it really makes me look like an idiot...Oh well...as long as others learn from it I don't mind.

Oh Man Dan do not sell yourself short, you are a very smart guy who seems to have a knack for picking this technical staff and understand it very well, and what is more you are able to explain it very well, that my friend is not a very common ability, actually you can make a fortune by writing technical staff that most people can understand. Actually, a very respectect car designer and engineer, Colin Chapman (founder of Lotus) said, "the problem with experts is they know what can't be done" and also "an inventor is someone who doesn't know that what he is trying to do is imposible", keep the good work and congrats, thanks for your posts and questions, and latelly for your answers ;D ;D

Anyways, next time i go fill it up, are you guys saying i should stick with bronze (87 i think?) instead of gold (89?) when i first bought it, i always filled her (my spruce magoose) with some 87, but my pops (father) talked to one of his friends who said you might as well go with 92 at the price...and then i think i read somewhere on here that 92 is too thick (am i talking out of my "edit profanity" here?) so i took some 89....
i think ill go back to 87.

NOOO! This thread will not die! Anyways, first you need to realize that at a lot of gas stations you aren't getting the gas you pay for because the pumps switch the fuel grades below the ground and there's probably about a full Ruckus tank in the lines so you're really getting whatever the guy before you selected. This only occurs at gas stations that use one pump for different types of fuel which is most of them where I live.
I'm not the octane expert but the vibe I've got from different threads on this forum is that stickin with 87 is your best bet. If you want higher go to a pump where the guy before you paid for 92. I think higher octane gas is completely useless unless either you're in danger of early detonation (not an issue with the Ruckus) or MAYBE you want the bike to run a bit cleaner. I've heard higher octane gases run cleaner but this may be caused by other additives they put in or it may just not be true. The idea that 92 is too thick seems like a longshot to me....
