How about Steelers QB "Big" Ben Roethlisberger? Crashed his Hayabusa not wearing a helmet. Ouch!
I tell you, if I was his coach, he would have more than a broken nose and jaw... he'd hafta get my foot surgically removed from his backside.

Yeah.
Oh, and I wasn't meaning by the thread that I think helmet laws are a good idea. I just think riding with one on is a good idea.
But I doubt a skullcap of 3/4s would have helped him, much.

Thanks god due to my former work i have seem first hand how safer everything is with the proper helmet on, I agree with you the helmet should not be mandatory but they should have public spanking for any idiot who have preventable injuries because he did not wear a helmet

Yeah same deal as seatbelts. I don't like the law cuz it threats people like babies...it should only require that people under 16 need to be buckled or something.

News flash - 90% of people are babies, stupid ones at that. Why else do you suppose our government feels the need to legislate common sense?
Does any intellegent person really need to be told to wear a seat belt, or a motorcyle helmet, to keep a gun away from the reach of children, to not drink & drive?

News flash - 90% of people are babies, stupid ones at that. Why else do you suppose our government feels the need to legislate common sense? 90% of people may be babies but I think you've got the causal arrow backwards. The controlling laws create idiots, which starts a vicous cycle that demands more and more laws. People don't think for themselves and act like babies because they're used to having their hands held and being guided through life because of stuff like this. People don't learn to think for themselves which creates a vicious cycle of stupidity. Eventually we just need say lets stop making our selves dumber and let the idiots die off.

Maybe you're looking at this like a Canadian.
In the US, the majority of people believe they are entitled to being taken care of and protected from themselves. And the system accomodates them.
Observe our legal system - ideally set up to hold others responsible for the incompetence of the injured party. A little thing called comparative negligence - even if the injured party is more than 50% responsible, the other person has to pay.
The result is you have to warn people of every possible danger, no matter how obvious. Ever notice all the warning stickers on a ladder? A cup of coffee (it may be hot?). A can of peanuts (I kid you not, it said "may contain nuts." The subtitled warnings on car commercials ("professional driver, do not attempt").
Incompetence is an institution in the US - observe our government in action.

Dude, the sole purpose of all those things is money. Not whereing your seatbelt, pay the seatbelt tax (fine!) Oh, God, there's peanuts in my can of nuts, I'm allergic (sue!) There's a lot of stupid people around, but if we didn't have all these laws protecting them, we'd eventually start to weed them out.
