My Ruckus meets 90% of my 2 wheel needs but have been thinking about something bigger for Highway. A guy at work inherited a 81 silverwing from his father a few months ago and now needs cash. It has 34000 miles on it and was allways garage kept and well mantained. He wants 700$. My Ruckus is my first road bike. Is a 500cc to big of a step up ? should I jump on the deal? I want it, don't need it, but can afford it.

You'll do fine on a 500. Get it!

That was my first big bike. Once you ride it down the block you will be used to it. Go for it!

You can probably do better cheaper if your patient. Silverwings were good bikes in there time, but an 80's 500 isn't all that highway proficient. I'm a big 750 fan. Honda made millions of them and there are more aftermarket parts out there for them than for any other bike.Technology has provided much more horsepower in smaller packages throughout the years. My 78 750 had about 35hp( about the same as a stock Harley pan head or evo). My 85 1100,120hp.The standard for the newer 600ish crotch rockets is around 100 hp on a very light bike. You should be able to get something bigger for the same money or less. I know of a running 78 750 that was purchased for $75. My personal experience has led me to want more power on the highway than a old 500 can muster. It'll run 70mph for a long stretch but you really don't don't have the punch that comes in handy keeping you out of harms way on the big four laners. It's all about personal preference and what you'll be using the bike for. The Silverwing will do fine on most roads your Ruckus won't and it's a solid design. Just know there are alot of used bikes in great condition waiting for you to buy them.
