I noticed that people change their oil more frequently than the manual suggests. It sounds like a good idea to me, at what mileage intervals does anyone recommend to change the oil? What is the best brand to use for city driving?

I'm no expert, but here's what I did. I change it often, since it's so much easier than a car, it's almost fun. I use Castrol 10w-40, car engine oil. My first oil change was at 600 km, then 1200. I plan to do the next one at 1800. After that I plan on using full synthetic 5w-40 and changing it every 1000-2000km's depending on the look and smell of it when I check the oil level.
note: my first oil change had metal bits in it. I found that the threads on the oil-screen cover had chunks out of them, probably from a hasty install at the factory. That's part of the reason for doing the frequent changes. The second oil change had no metal chunks or flakes at all, so I figure it's all good inside there now. ;D

I totally agree with that statement, i think 600 miles is a good interval to change the oil, we do not have an oil filter so changing it at such a short intervals is a good policy, inspecting the oil is a great idea becouse you can detect problem early on. inspect the oil with the dipstick is a great way to monitor engine status, so doing it as often as you like is a must ;D ;D

Being a yankee, I am a student of the standard measurement system rather than metric. To clarify, do you change your oil every 600 km, or 600 miles?

At the moment I change the oil every 600km (372 miles)
At 1800 km (1116 miles) I will begin changing the oil every 1000-2000 km (600-1200 miles) but I'll be using full synthetic motor oil.
This is just my opinion, because it's so easy to do and because I had metal flakes and bits in my first oil change.
Let the look and smell of the old oil be your guide to oil changing intervals. ;D
May the force be with you,

Put a good synthetic oil in there and don't worry about it until another thousand miles or you pull it out of storage after winter. You could probably push it over 1500 hundred if you wanted.
If you only take really short trips, and your engine doesn't have time to really get hot and evaporate the moisture in the oil, then you'll want to change it twice as often. If your doing 40 miles at a time, you could probably extend the interval as long as your comfortable with. If your using dino though, you'd want to change the oil more often.

To add on the great advise- If you use your scoot in the dirt you need to change it often no matter which oil you use. That motor inhales a lot of air and it's better safe than sorry.
