when my marks on the flywheel are lined up with the arrow, should i be able to stick a pencil in the plug hole ? trying to find tdc to adjust my valves with some more shims because i'm losing compression, though i would try the shim thing first

You should be able to stick one in a bit. I'd say just crank the engine with the kickstarter while you've got the pencil in there and then when it feels like it's at the top look at the timing marks and see if they're close. If they're off you just need to loosen off the chain tensoner on the top of the engine and it's easy to move the chain back/forward a few teeth.

checking valves- just make sure the camshaft is on the base circle- roll the engine over with the kick until it presses the rocker arm- then roll the motor 180 degrees. only 1/4 or so of the camshaft has a lobe on it. the rest of it should be ok to check the valve clearances from.
