I'm going to be replacing the valves on my 05 and by the service manual things look pretty straight forward. My question is though, are all the specialty tools (spring compressor, attachment and cam chain tenesioner stopper) necessary or can it be done without? Or is it one of those things where it can be done without but better off to have have them?

Once you get the head out of the engine is very easy, making a valve compresion tool like the one i designed helps but it can be done without. here if you go past the middle of the page you van see how-to make one [ftp]http://battlescooter.proboards27.com/index.cgi?board=howto&action=display&thread=1138840503[/ftp]

PJ-geez, did you ever even think of using the search first? hehe, let me know how that goes, or if you need a hand, I would love to see how it's done in person.

Thank you very much (not you Jedi ) Is that fancy little cam chain tensioner stopper necessary?

If you are changing the valves, the head need to be out of the engine, so you should not need the cam chain stopper. And the tensioner in the ruckus, can be lock in a not tension position

Ok, it said something about it in the service manual so just wanted to make sure. I'm much better at actually understanding things once I get into them and just wanted to make sure that I have everything on hand before getting started.

The valve springs are soft enough that you can replace the valves without needing a valve spring compressor. I just used a properly sized socket to push the valve spring down to free it.
