i hear a lot of advices to do the first change at 600 mi, but from my experience, when i changed it at 30 miles, it was black as... hmmm... as my ruckus' frame paint, and had all kinds of stuff in it. it was nasty! the next oil change i did at 100, and it was still nasty with all kinds of sludge and metal particles. so... do whatever you think is right, but i know i wouldn't want to ride 500 miles with all that dirt in my engine. tell me about it... I just changed my ruckus' oil for the first time (at 1000km) and it was so black and dirty, and it smelled so much like gas, so now I will change it every 500km atleast.

If your oil smells like gas, WAY MORE IMPORTANT THAN FREQUENT OIL CHANGES IS FOR YOU TO CHANGE YOUR RIDING STYLE. So go for longer rides at least once a week so your oil can warm and turn those gas fumes into a vapor the PCV system in your engine can burn

Why do some people recommend switching to synthetic oil after 1000 miles? I just changed mine (with Mobil 1 synthetic) for the first time at just over 400 miles and it was plenty black and although I didn't find any particles, it did smell kind of burnt. The bike sits for a week at a time all summer but I ride the "edit profanity" out of it all weekend long.
And, how do you get at the filter screen without removing the exhaust from the manifold? I tightened it without a tourque wrench because I didn't want to remove the pipe.

The reason for not switching to synthetic until 1000 miles is that you want to give your engine time for the rings/cylinder to wear in so you get a good seal. Synthetic oil is so good that it can just kinda glaze the cylinder leaving you with a permanently bad seal if you use it from mile one. Realistically, 1000 miles is on the safe side and switching it at 500 miles is probably good too. The rate of wear is the highest when your Ruckus is brand new and it slows down as you put miles on it so even by 100 miles there's hardly any wear left to happen and by 500 miles the break in is virtually done. 1000 miles is playing it safe.
About the filter screen...I haven't had problems removing it/installing it by using a wrench. I never used my torque wrench on it but yes if you wanted to then you'd have to remove the exhaust (5 bolts).

I agree, its good to replace your oil periodically, but in reality its not as big as everyone makes it out ot be. I have a 79 honda ct70 which i have owned since new, maybe replaced the oil 5 times, it sits all winter, has fallen into ponds, been ridden on trails and still turns over on one kick.
That being said, i want to set a better example with my Ruckus, I have 1400 km, did the first change at 1000km and the oil was clean (just black which will happen in any combustion engine).

Uhh.....that statement makes me nervous. The Honda CT70 is the best selling bike of all time, largely because it's so reliable and cheap. With the CT70 you can get away with anything! The Ruckus on the other hand is still reliable but it seems quite sensitive to needing fresh oil. The crankshaft bearings in the Ruckus frequently go after 5-15K miles so fresh oil every 600 miles is quite wise in my opinion...especially on 2003-2005 Ruckus which lack the newer crankcase ventilation system and thus dirty the oil very fast.
