Recently my Ruckus blew a fuse so I replaced it just to find that it immediately blew the replacement fuse I brought to a mechanic friend that has helped me work on it before. I thought that there must be a short somewhere and he told me that he thinks I need a new E.C.U. (Brain Box) I called the local Honda shop to see if they could order me one and they told me it would be about $300 for the part. Is there a place I can get a good one cheaper? Can I replace it with an upgrade that could help my Ruckus go faster? I don't know much beyond basic maintenance. Any advice?

Welcome...too bad it's on a down note. You can't replace it with an upgrade...there are aftermarket CDI's but they work in addition to the stock ECM instead of replacing it. As for the price...you're cheapest option is very likely RonAyers.com for a new one. They charge $7 for shipping to your door and the the ECM itself is $207. There are quite a few online Honda dealers that will sell you the OEM parts but RonAyers is generally the cheapest. You could check sites like BikeBandit.com and HaydenHonda.com but their prices aren't likely any better. Alternatively, you could keep an eye on eBay for a used one for much less. As well, try sending an email to the dude running www.970performanceparts.com. I know that guy has a ton of spare parts and a while back I think he had a few ECMs floating around. You need an ECM from a 2003 - 2005 Model. The '06 and newer ones are different and you can't really upgrade without changing your wiring harness too which adds a lot more cost.

Oh and I would be sure your ECM is causing the problem before you shell out that kind of money. I'd give another fuse or two a shot or maybe try going up a fuse rating or two...i know this is taboo but switching a 20 for a 25 might solve the problem and it shouldn't hurt anything. The worst case scenario is just that you fry your ECM which you are planning to replace anyways.

Thanks I'll try a new fuse,. I am curious about adding a C.D.I., I only need a little extra power to get me up some of the hills a bit smoother.

They don't do much. They:
1) Remove the Redline - Which is not a benefit because you only touch the redline down big hills. Your 2003 should hit the redline at 41mph so if unless you're bouncing off that you won't notice anything here.
2) Bypasses the Throttle Position Sensor - Lets you run an aftermarket carb which is basically pointless because the stock carb is huge and very good.
3) Advances the Ignition Timing - This causes your spark to fire slightly sooner so you get a slightly longer power stroke. In my experience the difference is either undetectable or a gain of 1-2mph max.
To get up hills better you should switch to lighter 6g rollers in your variator. This will change your shifting so you rev higher during acceleration and up hills. It will give you a small but noticable boost and it's cheap...about $20 for a set.

I needed a rebuild on 2003 ruckus. I found a cheap 2007 engine and swapped it out. Now it wont start. It get spark, will start if I put fuel in the carb direct and run until that is gone. It will start if I cover the intake side of carb and run rough until I move. I slso get fuel on my hand. I swapped carbs. Same thing. Fuel pump is fine. I removed carb cleaned it and replaced, same. I plan to clean carb again, but is there anything im missing? really getting frustrated.

You need a 2006-2019 ECU.

Two questions for you, first how do you determine the year of the scooter,I bought it as a pit bike with no title, where do you look and how?second is not really a question, but here goes, I had a problem with the ignition system,(now this happened over a year ago,was in the middle of a move&retirement) but I ended up replacing the ecu,the first day it ran like brand new, second day it would not start with the switch, had to kick start it,the next day it would not start at all, went through all the diagnose errors stuff but no good,so I was getting angry so called it a day,so the next day when I turned on the switch it blew the fuse to the fuel pump,to shorten this up I put a 30 amp fuse in it an It blew that 2 ,looked for a short cannot find one,any ideas.

The vin plate is on the front frame on left side under floorboard. Second if you are going through fuses like that with a new ecu I would test 3 things. Simplest to hardest, Battery, fuel pump , then stator . Ruckuses do not like low voltage, fuel pumps are known to go bad pretty often, and stator is used for charging and starting the bike .
