you need (what i've always called) a cats paw, and and a vice grip. not everyone owns an impact wrench. i find it to be better then the allen wrench method (that's how i broke 1 and 1/2 fins off) or the strap wrench , which made me want to kill myself and every one around me. i make no claims that you wont screw something up like this, but it worked for me. fyi, i'm putting things back together here, but you get the idea.

Using the vise grip will leave marks on the drive face like that. Make your own variator tool or there is some home made ones for sale on here. I made mine for less than $5.

Go down to any auto parts store and pick up an oil filter wrench. It's cheap, and works just fine for getting the variator off (as long as you're careful).

i hadn't thought about the drive face, i'll have a look at it. if it's ok though, this is what i'll do. and oil filter tool? no. that's gotta be a joke, right? that was the most aggravating thing i've done this year. a waste of money and time.

Interesting. I've been using an oil filter wrench with a rubber lining for years. Taken the variator off of several Ruckii, never had a problem.

Just used this tactic on the clutch bell...however, I wedged the nail puller (cat's paw) against my garage floor because I was nervous that something would get scratched up on the inside of the drive pulley system by wedging it there. It works just as well by levying the cat's paw against the ground.
