i just changed my oil and put in the honda recommended hp stuff, its a 10w 40 but the engine just doesnt seem like it likes it. would a 10w 30 be better? oh yea, also, its cold as "edit profanity" here in richmond, like 30 degrees.

in the service manual there is a chart that tell you what oil to use in a certain temp range, and it say that you can use a lower grade oil in cold temps, but it also say that you can use 10w40 in all temps. In Quebec its very cold too, like under 0C, and my ruckus run well with the 10w40 that I am running in summer

Never seemed to bother my girl with 10w40. You didn't overfill it, did you?

What was in there before and was it running fine then?________________ On any motorcycle scooter etc. once you get down to below 40 degrees F I always use 100% synthetic oil. For Rucksters who ride in cold weather and who want easy starting I'd go with Castrol Syntec 0w-30 that is made in west Germany. Says it right on the bottle. Affectionately called German Castrol on www.boistheoilguy.com Just in case you think this is a wimpy oil - it's NOT. Once it warms up to operating temp is actually close to a 35wt practically a 40wt oil. It is very shear stable and is probably over kill for the Ruck. It also holds up well on motorcycles that have wet gearboxes that are really hard and rapidly shear down oil. . The next oil that is favorite of mine is Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w-30. Just a tad thicker than regular Mobil 1 10w-30 and has more anti wear additives than what is in regular Mobil 1. There is also a 10w-40 version of this oil but I'd save that for hot weather. Another favorite which I run in most all of my air cooled power equipment is Shell Rotella synthetic diesel & gas rated 5w-40. Great reputation. Another great oil is Pennzoil Platinum synthetic. And of course there are the high end labels like Amsoil, Redline Moutul etc.

Can you tell any difference in accel, revs or power between Mobil 1 10w-40 or any other 10w-30 motor oil? no, I always used this oil in my ruckus. if it can be useful to someone, this is what the oil chart of the service manual say: from -12C(10F) to 33C(90F) you can use 10W30 from -12C(10F) to unlimited you can use 10W40 from -5C(22F) to unlimited you can use 15W40 or 15W50 from 0C(32F) to unlimited you can use 20w40 or 20W50

I like 10w40....really though the second number is the one you want to watch. 0w40, 5w40 or 10w40 will all be great. I like Mobil 1 or Amsoil's Powersports 0w40 oil.

It says the same thing in all the honda manuals. It's true for their motorcycles, but we have a dry clutch that isn't affected by the oil we use.

I use 5W40 Castrol GTX, because that is what they have in bulk at the shop, but if i would use syntethic oil i would get Ester oil from Nissan, just go to a dealer and tell them you want to use the ester oil they use in the GT-R (between 12 to 15 dollars a quart)

What's so special about the Ester oil? Is it better than Mobil 1 or Amsoil?
sleepcreeps, yeah just do a normal oil change. Warm up the scoot, shut it off, remove the drainbolt, let it drain, replace the bolt, fill it up via the dipstick, don't overfill, anywhere on the hashmarks is fine.

What's so special about the Ester oil? Is it better than Mobil 1 or Amsoil? Way better, most oils become multi-grades by the addition of polymers, that act as little springs that keep the molecules of oil; apart when is cold and allows them to become tighter when it is hot, therefore behaving very similar cold or hot, ester is a very stable chemical that does not change much cold or hot, so much so it is used on A/C system as lubricant, because it has to do so when the gas get compressed and become super hot and when it expands and become very cold, as you can see in a car engine it has it easy so it behave very consistent hot or cold, it used to be very expensive (Eneos sell them by the quart, just ask for the price) but since now Nissan sells it it has become affordable, and probably more car maker will put it on the hi performance oil, there is NO BETTER OIL for turbo engines, Nissan, Toyota, Porsche and Jaguar used it back in the IMSA GTP era when a quart was over 40 bucks a pop ;D And by the way congrats on your scooter guide ;D

Thanks....the scooter guide has been a lot of work but I've learned SO much by putting that together.
So in your opinion, is it worth it to use ester oil if want to take good care of my engine?
