The install is pretty simple. Loosen the nut, slide everything off, slide the new stuff on in the same order as the old stuff came off (there's like 5 parts) and retighten the nut. Don't be worried about the install. The only hard part is holding the variator so it doesn't spin when you're trying to loosen the nut. You can use a strap wrench, an impact gun or make a tool for a couple $$ at your hardware store (there are some pictured on this site). You could also jam something in there like a bicycle tube or a leather belt but it's a bit crude and you might warp something.

Yeah the install is really simple and the bang for the buck is about a ten!!!!

Make the wrench, its the only way I could hold the variator and turn the nut off, though from what it sounds like I'm an extream case. Just my 2-cents.

God bless you guys who have and take the time to make their one job specific tools. I'm too busy and pressed for play time. Strap wrench works ok but I prefer my Chinese 18volt 3/8 cordless impact. Cost only $30 @ Harbor Freight and an extra battery is only $10. Just a short couple zaps and the variator bolt bolt is off or plenty tight. Impacts are normally considered a no no by bike mechanics but the cordless is not gonna wreck anything unless you really get carried away. Has come in handy on the seat, floor board, and other bolts too. ;D

I depends on how new your Ruckus is. There gets to be quite of bit of grime under the variator cover after a few thousand kms. If you are careful this shouldn't be an issue though. Other than that and maybe dirt from your tires etc there isn't much to worry about. If your careful it wouldn' t be hard to pull off but why not do in the parking lot or something. If you have the right tools to get the variator nut off it's a 10-15min job.

There could also be a lot o belt dust inside your variator cover. If you lay down some newspaper under it, it should catch all of it.

Well I've never been to NYC. Where does everyone that lives in your apartment building park their cars? Anyways, If you're careful it shouldn't a problem to do in your apartment. You keep your Ruckus in there anyways right?

While i agree that an small cordless impact is a great solution, an i use one a lot at work, the reason to use a tool to hold the variator is the ability to torque the nut, which is a great thing if you intent to do it often, like i did, a strap wrench is kind of an uncomfortable solution, but i prefer to use it instead of jamming something between the variator and the case, because that puts a cavitating stress in the main bearings which they were not design to take, in any case just put old newspaper under and that should take care of any mess (like dirt and grime) and do it in your apartment. ;D ;D

I get about 10kph better climb speed on this one hill I go up and down regularly by my home. Where I was doing 30kph up it before I'm doing 40khp now! Not bad, a 33.3333% improvement!

That's great Wainair. I guess Abe and all the other modifiers on the board seem to think that that's the best bang for the buck. I guess the CDI is the next best value. I have consistantly hit 38MPH on the flats tucked so I know with the shield (Chanito hurry )the speed will increase. I am getting a Slipstreamer univ shield from BSS soon so more bugs will stay on their side of the screen. This time of year I almost have to carry window cleaner with me as I clean my face shield(s) twice a day.
