Hello, I'm relatively new to scooters but have recently purchased an '06 BR. it came with 35 miles on it but i am up to 600 already. Is it normal for the variator to kind of clunk from time to time when you are accelerating from either a dead stop or rolling slowly? also makes a icky belt slipping sound, but once it locks up it's ok. ? Thanks, Dave

Dave, Those clunky noises don't sound right. I have an 06. I've never noticed noises from the drivetrain.

My 06 with 2000 miles, makes the sounds you describe. After a weekend of dusty off-road riding it became especially noisy. The compensator (I believe that’s what the variable front pulley is called) was not opening up at idle so the belt slack was literally raising a ruckus. Cleaning helped, as there was a lot of compacted dust and grime limiting smooth travel, however I still get the noise occasionally.

Using some scotch brite on the faces of the pulleys and some tooth paste on the belt should fix those problems

I think i corrected the problem, i opened it up to see what was going on and it looked to me as tho the belt was dry, (who knows 2 or 3 years of sitting before i got it) So even tho i had the after market kit and belt on hand from battle scoot i just sprayed the belt with belt dressing and it made a world of difference. i am still driving it every day over 2000 miles now and still havent put the new parts in. too busy having fun i guess.

OK. I know this isn't the most active forum but i will try to keep it up to date, I am now up to 3900 miles on the Big Ruck, (and loving every minute of it). I finally got around to installing the variator kit and belt and looking at the funky noises etc. It wasn't as hard to open up and service as I thought, in fact, it was quite simple. Neither the variator or clutch are under any pressure if you un bolt them (use an impact wrench) The big problem was that the clutch and shoes were scored badly and unevenly, they were not a stock item (duh) at my local Honda shop but I ordered shoes and bell for about $130.00. In the mean time I brushed out the bell with a flap wheel and de-burred the shoes. I put in the Polini variator kit parts and gave it a try. Yuck. First, The belt was 1” too short, I will contact battle scooter and let them know the correct size. The red weights thy supplied were too light to make the scoot shift up, kind of like running in low gear all the time. I weighed the weights and they seem to be .6oz and the old ones were .9oz. I put the old belt back and went ½ ½ with the old weights and new. YUM. I didn’t see any problem with the stock pully that I replaced but sine I spent the doe I left ‘em in anyway. I can give you morte technical details if you like but I just wanted to post while I was looking at the site.
Good luck and good Rucking
Dave
