I use battery operated socks and gloves from Canadian Tire up here in Canada. I ride up until the snow is thick....usually some time in Dec. Right now though, when it is closer to o to 5 celcius (not sure wht that is in farenheit)...I need the gear for any trip that takes longer than twenty minutes. The only drawback is that the battery ( 9 volt) lasts about 5-6 hrs , so get rechargeable. The socks and gloves are 25$ cdn each. Hope that helps Len

Ran it into google- got a lot of results. Now I'm just looking for something that isn't 'too bulky'- Thanks for the tip- battery powered is the perfect answer for us. We have multiple bikes and something we can wear on any of them is perfect- don't want to have to buy something for each one! Thank you!

You can get heated grips, gloves, chaps, and vests. The grips draw about 15 watts on HIGH, and 7-1/2 watts on low. I would think you would need some sort of handlebar cover (like those for ATVs) to keep the wind off your hands and for the heat to stay on your hands. Most of the heated items pull down very little power.
Some use, BMW style plugs; which could be better; so, you don't mix up a cigarette lighter with your heated gear. Most have a thermostat as an option; but that can cost extra. An on-off switch might do the job for you. I would want to wire up a relay to control any heating device. That keeps the power for the item from the regular wiring harness.

Just a quick note on heated gear. I have been using Gerbing heated jacket liner and gloves for a year now on my Silverwing and now on my Big Ruckus. The alternator puts out approx. 400 watts and is plenty to power it all. I just wonder why it took me so long to buy the electrics and ride almost all year long ;D
