My brother has one....it's a 1983 or 1984 although in Canada it's called a Mascot instead of an Aero. Anyways, they're awesome scooters but it depends what you mean by 'project'. If you're looking for a scooter to pimp out there are cooler scooters with a better aftermarket like a Honda Dio but the Aero 80 is a sweet ride so it would be a cool scooter to pick up and fix up. There is a decent amount of used stock parts on eBay if you need something and Honda still sells all the parts too.
My bros Aero 80 stopping running last fall and it sat for the winter and then this spring we dove in and discovered that the reed valve had cracked so we got a new one (about $20) and it was up and running pretty good until a couple months ago when a mysterious electrical problem happened. I haven't had time to take a look at it and he doesn't know what he's doing but it seems like a bad connection somewhere but nothing happens when you press the start button. Hopefully we can get that working again soon.
The Aero 80 is a blast to drive. It's a 2-stroke 80cc so it has tons of balls....if you sit at the back of the seat you can wheelie pretty easily although the front end is really light so it's fluttery and tough to hold a good wheelie....a crashed once and did a number on my palm trying to impress my girl (who was in a car behind me) with a wheelie across an intersection.
Anyways, the pros are that it's got on ton of spunk (although it still tops out around 45mph) and it's a fun (a bit quirky) scooter which is a quality Honda bike. The cons are less aftermarket than some other scoots inc. the lack of big bore kits, exhausts etc.
Check out what Doug Simpson at My Scoot has to say about one. He restored one and has a ton of great info on his site. He's even got some performance info about guys who's souped them up to go 60+ mph.

One big upside to the Aero 80 is the glovebox...it seals great and it's huge so you can easily toss some glove and mug of coffee or whatever in there. There's also some storage under the seat. My bro's isn't in the best shape but you could easily buy all new body panels from Honda for $200 or so and have it looking mint. The fuel gauge is really nice too....way cooler than just a low gas light.
