Thank you for this great How To.
Other than the symptoms listed at the top (ticking, hard to start, etc), should this valve procedure be routinely done at any specified mileage (like a VW engine)? Or just go until the engine tells us when to do it?

After you've been using your Ruckus for a few months, if you notice that it's getting slower this might be the cause (or part of it) so it's not a bad idea to check them then. Using the feeler gauges can be awkward so a good rule of thumb is that if you feel just a faint about gap by rocking the arm then it's pretty close. If you can't feel anything the gaps are too small (or you don't have the piston at TDC of the compression stroke) and if the gaps are big enough that you can actually make a 'tick' noise yourself then they're probably too big. You wanna just barely be able to discern some slop.

You should check the valve gap after the first 500 miles and then 2500 miles after that, mine were tight at 300miles so i had to adjust them, they have been good ever since, and i checked them at 2500 miles and 5000 miles

The shims look like tiny little metal discs....they're about 5mm in diameter and about 2mm thick (depending on the size). They're about $5 each at any Honda dealer. I guess you could buy a bunch at RonAyers.com but you'd have to wait for the shipping and you'd probably need to order a bunch of sizes so you know you're getting the right ones.

Here's my obligatory stupid question: At APPROXIMATELY what mileage would I have to start wondering if the valves need gapping? 1000? 5000? 20,000? I'm at 1250.

A new Ruckus engine can get out of wack pretty early...some have reported their valves being way off at 500 miles. Basically, at first it's a crap shoot...some peoples tighen, others loosen and other are fine for thousands of miles. I recommend checking them early...like in the 1000-2000 mile range and then again around 4000 miles. After you've done them twice they shouldn't change much anymore so you can go to longer intervals like 10,000 miles.

As soon as 500 miles!? Wow. Guess I know what I'm doing when I get back from vacation... ...in Alaska... ...salmon fishing on the Kenai River. Yes, you should be jealous!

Just thought I would post some pictures of a newer 4 valve fuel injected cylinder head... 2,000 miles and all gaps still within specified tolerances. It seems easy to replace the shims as those valve arms just slide to the right to expose them - you can see that one is marked 220 and the other 222 - presumably from new... I've added the pictures to my pbase online album so you should be able to see them from the links below - let me know yes or no! These should link straight to the 3 photos www.pbase.com/staib/image/92721506www.pbase.com/staib/image/92721576www.pbase.com/staib/image/92721612The wonderful Kami no Chiizu has thought he'd further destroy bandwidth with this thread, hence, the three pictures:

it would be handy as my 4v head threads never have pics of the head without the cover and the all the running gear in situ...
oh the pics are not showing yet...

Interesting. If I right-click them to show picture, it doesn't work. But if I open the link above and let the picture load, then close it out and right-click the picture again, it works.

so thats why they are $100 each then!! zoomer f1 technology... so now do you thing they could be good for 14,000rpm? staib, did you pull the rocker arms to one side to expose the shim numbers? as it looks like they are not too central in the shim? i'm talking of the first shot.
