I've found pipe clamps or oil filter wrenches seem to work well.

Hi, my name is John. I recently put back on my stock variator after riding about 1,000 miles on my Kitaco. I tried changing back to the stock with lighter weights doing some speed testing. When I switched back to the stock I cleaned it off with brake cleaner (found out that's not really clean). As I was getting to around 30mph I heard the gasket for the variator and pulley housing blow. The variator plates were covered in black scuffs from the belt rubbing against them.
Basically, my three questions are: 1. Was it because of the brake cleaner? 2. Should I just reclean the variator with soap and water? 3. Can I use that gasket creating glue stuff to replace the gasket.
Thanks in advance.

I heard somewhere that the brake cleaner is hard on gasket but I am not sure, mabye the gasket were not positionned properly and it goes on the belt. I don't think its a good idea to use soap on the variator, it would make it slippery, the last time I cleaned this area I used a spay can of ''gunk remover'' and then I rinced it with water, it wokerd well but mabye there is a better method
edit:spell correction

Do the rollers have to be facing with the nylon side toward the pressure? Does it really make a difference? Other than noise?

Yes, the rollers face the pressure. They might wear the sides of the variator out.

Oh dear....you probably didn't have the splined kickstarter washer started on the splines when you torqued the nut on and now the ends of the threads are mashed. You need to get the variator off first of all. Just wiggle away and pry a bit if you have to (with a flat bladed screwdriver). Once you get it off, use a file or something to clean up the splines and then put it back on carefully. Squeeze the belt down into the rear clutch to get slack so you can get all the variator parts started on the splines before you torque the nut. Are you using a variator tool? It's very important to get the nut tight.

It's very important to get the nut tight. That's a good life lesson. HA! But seriously, once you have the right tool and learn to do this right, it's a breeze. For most people, swapping in a better variator should be one of your first mods for sure.

Ok if this should be one of the first mods I need to ask a few questions. I hope you will give me this as it's easier to just ask all here than to search thousands of different threads.
What does this mod accomplish? Is it just a little more power? Or is there more to it? What all do I need to buy? Just a variator or could new weights or rollers or whatever they are called be placed into the old variator?

A different variator can give you more top speed (depending on your weigh) or better acceration or hill climbing. It will not make the engine have more power. You could buy just a variator. If the weights have flat sides on them, get new weights. New weights can be placed in the old variator. If you weight around 200 pounds, the stock 6 gram Met weights are good because they last longer than most aftermarket weights. Please read the threads, they can give you more info. and a better idea of the variator that best fits your weight and situation.

ok, so i took off variator to install sliders in it. put it back together and when driving i couldnt break 30 and i smelt rubber so i took it back to the shop, took off the bolt, and the kickstart washer wouldnt come off. why is that? i need to go back to the shop tomorrow so i can fix my mistake but i have to be able to pull the kickstart washer off first which will not budge.
