What size strap wrench are you using there? I am taking on a new Mallosi variator this week. Any other tips i've missed.

You'd probably need one with a fairly skinny strap. I tried using a fairly average sized one and couldn't get the strap between the variator and the case. If you can't find one you could always pick up the proper variator tool ;D

The strap wrench i was using was actually and oil filter wrench, that worked really well, not as good as the universal holder though.... you can find it at an automotive store for all of $7

When installing mine all I did was put a driver bit between one of the fins and the inside of the case. Worked great. Was just kinda a hey, lets see if this works thing.
This guide helped with my install a lot. Took me about 20-30 mins to do.

Good to hear that worked out for you. I've done something similar too when I got stranded once. My g/f ran me out some wrenches and then I slipped one of the drive cover bolts between the fins and let that hit against the case. You do need to be very careful though because you can snap fins this way. I've done it. It's a little scary putting 24 ft-lbs of torque when you reinstall the nut with just something between the fins.

Dude, thanks for the great instructions. I was having a go fitting my polini variator but got stuck when it came to taking the main nut off.
I could not get my hands on a strap wrench so improvised with a oil filter tool with a metal strap. Trouble is it kept pinging off everytime I tried to turn the main bolt.
I see everyone is saying a universal holder is best, does anyone know where I can get hold of one in Europe? I'd massively appreciate any pointers, I was so near yet so far. In the end I had to give up and put everything back togather for another try.
My wife works as a chemlical engineer and said she can order me a tool through their maintenance dept. Trouble is I don't know what to ask for!

Hey bifter there is a how-to on making your own tool, but any scooter accesories store will seel you a universal holder, or email DD when he comes back from his honeymoon and get one from him

I'm out of tools right now but I'll be making more next week if you want one. I'm still swamped from moving into my new place.

Wow you guys are great ! I changed my rollers in my stock variator for 6 grams from importations thibault. not the same material as stock rollers so the clicking noise i hear when starting my ruckus got softer !!! AND i did it with the awesome How-to of timber ! AND with the extremely "Cool variator tool" from Dandy Dan ! The result ? +5 KPH of general acceleration, climbing hills and against wind. SO COOL ! Thanks guys !

don't think so. It took me some time to figure out that there's some fitting holes through the fins ! I put the lower middle screw of the cover in its hole and use it to hold the tool while i carefully bolt or unbolt the variator. Extremely useful tool ! Everyone have to buy and even more if you made an ugrade !

Putting that lower bolt in the drive case is a great idea. thanks for sharing that idea. I was toying with the idea of putting sort of a bolt into the handle that hits the case but yours is an even better idea. I should make up a set of instructions with pics to send out with my tools.
I did make an upgrade to the tools which is partially cosmetic (rounded the corners and smoothed the edge a bit more) and partially function (made the short metal bar have 2 bars so it's stronger) which helps if you have a particularly stubborn nut. thanks for the support!

I'm not sure...I'd like to start up a website this winter with some Ruckus parts that will be operational for spring. I kinda like www.DandyDansScootShop.com but it's a pretty long name. I'd like to keep the name a bit more general than 'super tools' because I want to get into other stuff like engine rebuilding/boring/porting and possibly work on importing some variators, rims and forks.

How about www.DDSS.com and then I'd call it: Dandy Dan'sScooter ShopAnyways, I'm thinking about selling an intake kit for the Ruckus which would be all legit K&N parts that are that K&N red filters with chrome end caps that say K&N. There would be three seperate filters and it would work perfectly and come with modified intake hoses so it would be an easy 'bolt on' intake. The only downside is that real K&N stuff is expensive so it'd would probably be in the $125 to $149 range.
