Do I have to buy a giant jug of Honda coolant, or can I mix in some regular green?

I'm pretty sure you can use the regular stuff as long as it's the universal stuff and not the brand specific ones. I wouldn't mix it in though. You may as well give it a coolant change since it's so easy and requires only 0.5qt or so. Just drain the old coolant out of the rad via the drain plug at the bottom and toss in fresh stuff. There is also a drain bolt on the far side of the engine if you really want to get it all out.

Thank you for your reply. I guess I might as well do that. Should the level be at the top line when cold?

Yeah, but you'll find the level doesn't really change much at all.
