Hey guys. First off, let me reintoduce myself, as i have not posted in a while (although i have been lurking whenever i have a question, and always find an answer). My name is B, i live in stevens point, WI, and i have an 03 bought new in 03. I just did the valve spacers as i was losing power, and having a heck of a time starting the machine when it was cold. The problem was the intake had NO gap so the valve was not sealing tight. The exhaust side was fine, so i didn't touch it. i didn't purchase a new spacer, but rather carefully ruduced the thickness using a good caliper and a diamaond sanding plate. i took the spacer from a 189 to a 172, which gave me the specified gap. the results where great. Starting is now not a problem, and my WOT cruising speed is back to the low 40mphs, where it used to be (it was only reaching 35ish recently.) anyway, my question is this... now there is noticably more valve tapping noise, which i guess makes sence, as there is a gap now. It doesn't sound bad, but i can hear it. does this mean i went to far? should i be able to hear it at all? I don't see how i could have gone to far as i was very careful and quadruple checked everything, although i have not taken the time to dissasamble again to remeasure after running it a bit. if i did go too far, what are the consequenses? Also the bike will "diesel" slightly now after killing the ignition, which makes sense as now the valve is actually holding pressure. running to lean?? should i re-jet?? i'm already running a 90jet with my home-engineered intake. any thoughts?

8-)There should be a ticking noise, but i think your main jet is too big and there is so much carbon in the combustion chamber, your engine is pinging, get a leaner main jet and a fresh spark plug, go for a long hard ride and everything will be back to normal ;D Congrats on the valve adjustment

Hi B. The valve gap should be 0.10mm for the intake and 0.19mm for the exhaust. The valve tapping noise is a result of having a valve gap now. If you have a valve gap it will make some tapping noise if you can hear good you probaly can hear it. If the gaps are right, measured with a feeler gage then I would not worry about the valve tapping noise. I am guessing the valve gaps are right because you say it is going just as fast as it was before. If the valve gaps are too big it will take a while before it would hurt anything, but the exhaust would be the first to be hurt as the hot exhaust gases would burn the valve. If you just have the homemade intake, the 90 main jet is way to big. Most likely with just the intake you will be a lot closer to the stock main jet and need to shim the needle. Maybe cut the diaphan spring too. The dieseling I think is caused by to big main jet. I think you need to rejet.

doesn''t pinging occur when too lean?
i know 90 sounds too big, but it really seems to run the best with it. I have changed it many times cuz i didn't believe it either, and always end up back at 90. with an 80 it's way doggish, an 85 works, but not as well as the 90. during mid summer, the 85 seems to do ok. I only have multiples of 5, so that is all i've used. mind you, i haven't touched the jets since doing the valves, don't know if thats important or not...
also, when i built my intake, i tried to tune it to an open pipe resonence to match it to a multiple of 8500rpm. Which i figured might have an effect of "slamming" more air through the valve at that engine speed... not sure if that would really do much, but i was in college getting a degree in physics and building subwoofers for cash at the time, so i had the know how and thought i would try it. if nothing else it sounds cool. the point of that long story, is just that it MIGHT have some effect and MIGHT explain why the 90 seems to work for me.
took it for a long ride today. cruised at 42. hit 46 max (per gps) on a particularily smooth road, maybe a little tail wind. ran great. good accel. checked my plug as soon as i returned, and it was a nice brown color. not too black, not too white. which is how i often double check my fuel ratio.
anyway, if you guys say not to worry about the valve noise, i won't (much). thanks
