So I should look into changing my oil at about 600 miles/1000km? Don't look into it, just change it. I change mine every 5-600 and believe me it's real dirty by then. Most of my runs don't last five minutes and the oil picks up dirt in a hurry. Pull your dip stick and lay it on a white paper towel. You'll see how brown it gets. It's cheap insurance to help keep your high reving motor trouble free.

Yeah...Did my own first oil change and just about time for my second one. Only thing that bugs me a bit is how to get a torque wrench on the screen nut, think I need some fancy tool.

You don't need to check that screen nut near as often as you change the oil. In my experience, it's never really been dirty in 23,000kms but still check it occasionally. For a basic oil change just see you owners manual but basically what you do is:
- Warm up your engine for a couple minutes - Let it sit for a couple minutes - Remove the dipstick (so it drains faster) - Remove the drain bolt below the variator (15mm??) and catch the oil in whatever - Reinstall clean drain bolt - Pour .6L or so of new oil in the dipstick until it's about 3/4 of the way up the hashmarks - Reinstall dipstick - Clean your funnel and properly dispose of the old oil. - Check your oil level from time to time to make sure it isn't changing.

hmmm...that makes me wonder about the effects of the oil I threw in. I know it's thick gear oil but it seems quite thick. Maybe I robbing power (oh no!).

I like $55, I thought it would be in the hundreds. I used to motorcycle prices. $4 is good too.

56 dollars for an oil change and a wash seems like highway robbery to me, plus more than likely it will be done by the less skilled tech in the dealer, i work in a car dealarship, and an oil change with full inspection, brakes, hoses, belts, tires, etc is 29.99 and we use 5 quarts of oil not 0.6

Just did my first oil change at 125mi, pretty dark stuff! Seems like Half-Pint got a shot of something good, as she has more off-the-line zip than when I first drove her off the lot I can't wait to start wrenching on her and learn the internals! Rob

;D It is OK Robo, it is just that it burns me that everybody think that because you fix cars for a living, you are an uneducated brute who could not do anything else, and i have to admit that there are a lot of those calling themselves auto techs, but some of us got good grades in school and went to a vocational school to learn this trade, expend 30k in tools and keep up with the improvements in cars by going to classes, and i do not charge a penny to my friends, and grscum is correct bike and boat tech charge a lot more for similar jobs, i guess because they assume that bikes and boat are a luxury LoL . . . I paid 23,000 for a college degree in Psychology and I honestly wish and prefer I would have just mentored a local mechanic . . . or at the most went to tech school. Those "mokeys" make more than I do, and acutally have skills that are totally useful in todays world. Anyone willing to pay me $20 an hour for some psychological insight ?
