Oh man...I hit a real wall today with my Beluga. My 0.25mm oversized piston and rings arrived friday so this morning I removed the old piston and had a look at it and I noticed that someone in the past has already tossed in a 1.00 mm oversized piston so the oversized piston I got is actually way too small. To make it worse, I can't even find a record of Yamaha making this 1.00 piston because all the fiche lists is 0.25mm and 0.50mm so I can't even get new rings for it. I might have to pick up a cylinder somewhere and bore that out to fit my 0.25mm oversized piston or I'll just return/sell the piston and slap the 1.00 back in, ideally with new rings if I can find them somewhere.

2 cycle pistons are cheap, so just do a search or call Wiseco and have them put you in touch with someone that sell them

I may do that or I may just pick up a used cylinder on eBay and start over with a 0.25mm oversize piston. There was a used cylinder on eBay last week that didn't sell and the starting bid was only $15 so I'm kicking myself for not discovering this sooner and picking that up.
For now I'm going to toss the 1.00 piston back in with the same rings. It had a little blow by but the clearance specs weren't way off and everything looked pretty good so I don't think the piston is my big problem. I think I'm going to run that piston now while I get the other issues sorted out and then hopefully once I've got it running good I'll toss a new piston in to really make it purr.

i would try to get new rings, as they do not last much on 2 cycle engines you might have to do it again later

Atta Boy About my Beluga...what I've learned is that the piston in my scooter is a 1.00mm oversized piston from a 1976-1981 Yamaha YZ80 (dirtbike). Another scary thing I noticed last night is that my ring gap is supposed to be 0.15mm - 0.35mm but mine is way bigger than that. I didn't measure it but it appears to be around 3mm...it's huge. Anyways, I put it back together last night because regardless of what I end up doing, I wanted to get it running again to see what sort of a difference the unstuck reed cage is going to make. Unfortunately, when I got it back together last night I couldn't get it started so I guess I'll need to have a look and see if I did something wrong. I'm going to take it back apart again once I know what I'm doing but I'm not sure if I should get new rings for this cylinder or a new cylinder and start over with a smaller oversized piston. The cool thing about having that YZ80 piston in there is that rings are all over eBay for it so for about $15 I can get new rings. There's a good chance I do that eventually but right now I just want to get it running and see how it runs before I make more changes.

I won some new rings on eBay for $15 and I have a theory on why my scooter won't start. I was baffled why my scooter won't start anymore because all I did was disassemble the top end, put it back together and then remove the reed cage and bolt it back on but now I think I may not have torqued the reed cage down tight enough so I could have an air leak there. I replaced the screws with bolts but the bolts were shorter so I took it easy on the torque which may be causing an air leak. I know it's an air/fuel mix problem because I when I squirt some gas in the spark plug hole it'll run briefly and I haven't touched the carb since I rebuilt it so I can't think of any other possibilities than an airleak or a problem with the reed cage.

My parts are trickling in...I got a new flasher relay the other day and there's a parcel waiting for me at the post office now which hopefully is my new exhaust (old one had a huge dent).
I'm actually off to Cuba tomorrow for a little chilling in the sunshine so I won't be online for a week but once I'm back I'll catch up online and the rest of these Beluga parts should be here so hopefully I can get it running good.

So I am the proud owner of one of the other Belugas for sale listed earlier kansascity.craigslist.org/mcy/388493766.htmlI picked up the scooter for $75 and was hoping to make a quick profit. I have taken inspiration from this thread and am no longer going to sell it. I have decided that I to will do my best to fix mine and restore it as best I can. I have to say I have an uphill battle. Right now it runs but here are the problems I am facing 1. It only stays running when I don't have any of the vaccum hoses hooked up to the carb. I have taken the carb apart three times and cleaned it but for some reason it runs better with out those damn hoses connected. 2. The body needs major work but I am focusing on the engine now. 3. The brakes are not really working. I have replaced the front cable and now have front brakes and am waiting for the rear cable. 4. Electrical. I don't even know where to start here first of all when I got it it had no battery and had not been ridden in who knows how long. I tried to hook up a battery and can't get the auto start to work so I just kick start it. 5. Lights- headlights and front blinkers work. When I bought it the rear light was missing and I just got a new rack with the rearlight from ebay. I still need to get that going. Basically I am just trying to get tha engine adjusted so it will run but I can't figure out why it dies when I hook up those darn hoses.

Nice stuff! I responded to your email. About my Beluga....I seem to have an air leak coming from either under the reed cage or for where the cylinder bolts to the case. When I blow in the intake manifold I can hear the air hissing out from somewhere. I've ordered new gaskets so hopefully when they arrive in a week or so I can get this running properly. I also have new rings that should fit much better because whoever tossed the last rings in used ones that were too small.

I got the new rings in and the compression is much better....I'm reading around 130-140psi instead of 110-120psi. As well, I found why it wasn't starting (I had the base gasket upside down creating an airleak) so hopefully once I finish getting it all back together it'll be running good. So far the major problems I've had with this scooter are:
- Majorly dented exhaust header - Reeds jammed partially open - Carb slow jet clogged - Undersized rings left a huge ring gap (3mm) giving me low compression

Continuing my brain dread streak, I put the piston in upside down when I flipped the base gasket right side up which is why it wouldn't start. That's not a huge deal in a 2-stroke like it is for a 4-stroke because there are no valves and cutouts, it just mattered because there were holes in the skirt of the piston that were leaking the case pressure into the exhaust.
Anyways, it runs again and with the improved compression plus fixed reed cage it goes about 55km/hr instead of 45km/hr but it should still have another 10-15km/hr left to realize. I'm hoping that I'll gain a lot of that when I replace the exhaust since my header is badly dented in and probably 1/2 blocked. I picked up an aftermarket exhaust but my scooter would run when I tossed it on. After kickstarting it, I'd hear a faint hiss for 10 seconds or so which lead me to discover that the exhaust tip was virtually clogged with carbon build up. This muffler has a very small tip of maybe 1/2" diameter. Hopefully once I unclog that (any suggestions? it's about 4 inches long and curved like a banana) it'll run better.

Okay so I unclogged the muffler....I ended up just cutting the curved tip down to about 2" long from 4" long so that it was straight enough that I could clean out the clog with a small flat bladed screwdriver. I tossed that on and my top speed rose from 45km/hr to 60km/hr ;D
I still think it's capable of a bit more but atleast it's fast enough now that I can ride it around and remain sane. Also yesterday I installed the new brake shoes which arrived after months on backorder and the horn decided to work again so it's very close to being ready to safety.
The last thing I have left to do is get the rear blinkers working. Whoever owned this scooter last sure did a crappy job with the wiring in the battery/blinkers area. Nothing makes sense because all the color coding is gone. Oh well, hopefully I can get it blinking soon because we're having a fall scooter ride here next weekend which is shaping up to be a gem!

So to conclude this adventure, I got my Beluga safetied on Friday! It runs okay...it's slower than I expected but it crawls up to 40mph...it's pretty much exactly like a stock Ruckus. I still have to get the battery wired up because it's sorta bypassed right now but that's about it. I"m hoping to pick up a used expansion chamber exhaust for cheap off of eBay and see if I can modify that to fit because the stock exhaust sucks. The stock carb sucks too....at 13mm it's way too small so I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a deal on a bigger one but that's probably a winter project too because I'll probably need to make the intake manifold from scratch. that looks like a road near me.. looks like a great ride

So of course I couldn't leave well enough alone. This scooter cruised at about 40mph if I was lucky which is way slower than an 80cc 2-stroke should. Accordingly, I identified the problems as: - tiny 13mm carb - poorly designed reed cage - crappy exhaust design (matters a lot for a 2-stroke) So accordingly I picked up a whole slew of parts that should turn this scooter into a firebreather including: - New cylinder with more aggressive ports - Way better reed cage that mounts in a new spot to the new cylinder (old location has been capped off) - New intake manifold - New 21mm Carb - Tecnigas RS exhaust - Ligher roller weights Here are a few teaser pics: Oh and a new sticker:
