I live in Vancouver too and the term Hongcouver is not a racial slur as far as I am led to believe by both whites AND asians. I simply refers to the fact that a lot of asians from Hong Kong live here. So many infact that they have mixed Hong Kong with Vancouver = HONGcouver. Think of the mishmash of languages that some Japanese people speak incorporating both Japanese and English = Japlish, or in the case of Spanish + English = Spanglish. No racial slur there. Lets all just take it down a notch.

listen,
it may not offend you but it offends me. Also i'm not an imbecile and am fully aware of the amount of asians living in british columbia, I lived in vancouver, surrey, richmond a few years of my life and I visit family almost every year. "some" people don't take offense to honger, hongcouver, nip, chink, flip, gook etc, but this one does. I'm sorry but I categorize all those as the same, so if anything let's just keep comments/sayings similar to those to your own personal conversations not on this board where people might take it a different way even if no harm was meant. my cents

First off, the term "Hongcouver" was not meant as any sort of slur. Vancouver is a beautiful city with a very international flair. The fact that the percentage of the cities population of Asian inhabitants (a signifigant # from Hong Kong) has risen steadily and rapidly over the years, is not a negative in my opinion. Secondly, I have spent a good amount of time, in the past, in the fair city of Vancouver and while I was living in or around the city almost everyone I knew there refered, at one time or another, to the city (lovingly) as "Hongcouver". At other times I heard the city called "Hollycouver" or "Hollywood North". Frankly I would take much more offence to that than any other name. Thirdly, Lighten up. As I said the term "Hongcouver" was not intended as a slur and I won't appologize for using it. The internet is jam packed with IDIOTS just waiting to ruin your day. I can't imagine what an average day would be like if I got flustered everytime one of them said something that I didn't like. A thick skin and a good sense of humor are prerequisites for everyday life.

On a random note, I found out today I could use Wal-Mart's self checkout in Spanish. Don't know why it was in Spanish, I don't remember hitting a button for Spanish, but I was like, whatever. Chanito, this is all your doing!

They call me the check-out bandito HAHAHA!!! People at work call me the "french connection". Some jerks would turn around and file a complaint because it offends them, but seeing as i have a very good sense of humour, i love the name. "Hey french connection, we've got somebody looking for T slips" Just tell them i'm not here...the french connection strikes another victory, muahahahaha

If we are going to, then I want the following topics, names and jokes banned; no balding jokes, no fat jokes, nothing refering to any religion (even atheists or Satan worshipers), no territorial jokes as I live on the east side, no nickname calling, (only the ones we've chosen), ....am I making my point here? This is a slippery slope. Ruckass

It's all sticks and stones, you know. Words are just what you make of them. If you find things offensive, it's just adding to racial boundries. That's just what I think, at least.
I don't mean to offend. ;D
